Driving On The Trails In Mich.

I'll be heading up to the U.P. in July for aweek of camping and fishing w/ the family.
I was trying to find out how much is the sticker so I don't get busted by the law out there on the trails (snowmobil/4x4 trails)

Make sure you get the sticker in advance if you can. I went wheeling with some MI guys and we tried ten different places to get my "Out of State" sticker. Not one of them had a clue how to do one. Ended up having to go w/o the sticker which kinda ruined the trip, always wondering if I would get caught

Hopefully one of the MI guys can chime in with who to contact to get yours.

Last time I bought an ORV sticker it was about $16 I think. Pretty much any motorsports (quad, dirtbike) shop or dealership is going to have them. I'm not sure about the out-of-state tag, I've never heard anything about that. Check http://www.michigan.gov/dnr for info. Good luck and have fun.

We were up at Silver Lake a couple of years ago. The stickers that we needed to get were a Michigan State Park permit and the ORV sticker. The state park permit you can get at any state park ranger station and the ORV permit we just picked up at a 4x4 shop in Silver Lake. I think you you only need the state park sticker if you'll be doing any trails within a park.

MI ORV sticker is 16.25
State park pass is i think about 40 for out of staters

To the best of my knowledge there are only 3 spots in Michigan that a Registered car needs an ORV sticker, that is Silver Lake, Mt st. Helen, and the Mounds. In the UP you should be fine without an ORV sticker, but its better to be safe than sorry, especially since they are only 16.25. You can order them from the DNR's website, by them at Silver lake, or Buy them anywhere Michigan DNR licenses are sold, so you can buy them at most meijers and other hunting/sporting good stores.

An ORV sticker is needed for any trail that is designated as an ORV Route. The stickers are $16.25 and can be purchased at Walmarts, Meijer or any sporting goods that sell hunting and fishing licenses. The stickers are good through March 31st. You may have to wait till after this week to get the '07 sticker.

There are many trails in the northern lower peninsula and UP. If you into Geocaching. Check out the Rocket Rangers cache. It is at the top of the Keweenaw peninsula where US 41 starts. It is just past Fort Wilkins state park. Enjoy...

if you look at the rules though, if your vehicle is registered by the secretary of state you don't need an ORV sticker, but if you are near grayling its pretty easy to find yourself at Mt st helen where you need an ORV sticker on your SOS licensed automobile.

Hey ! thanks everyone for the info on this

So do you think I can get it at Cabelas or not ? We stop there every year to pick up that
special fishing lure and lunch. I know where the Grayling exit is at off of 75N. I generaly buy my fishing tag at a gas station by camp and my beer

Thanks Again. I have just started to go the trails up there to explore and get off the road alittle to get away. I'll be going up there in July .
Well I just checked it out and found out that I can get a one day pass for $8.00 that aint bad. thanks again Dave

So where do you get the one day pass at?? Just wondering so when I get ready to go up that way, if you can pick them up at Cabelas thats cool only 1/2 hour away!

I bought mine at Forwards Gas Station in Standish on US 23. I have also seen them in gas stations in St. Helens.

ORV Sticker? ORV Sticker? You don't need no stink'en ORV Sticker.

Your do not need any ORV sticker for your Lib. There id NO State or Privet "Off Road Park" in the U.P. of MI. The hole darn UP is widw open for 4 wheel'en. Just stay off posted or gate areas. There is endless old logging trails up here. Get a Good map and or plot book and just explore. I was born and still live in Marquette (left for a stint in the USAF) and never bought a ORV sticker for a liesens/regestered vehicle. Good luck. Have fun!! :lol:

Here is what I found about when an ORV sticker is needed for a licensed vehicle.

Licenses are valid from April 1 through March 31 of the following year, regardless of the date of purchase. Vehicles that are licensed under the Motor Vehicle Code as street vehicles require an ORV license only at such time as they are being used as an ORV. A “street-licensed” ORV does not need an ORV license to use forest roads, but it will need an ORV license if it is used on designated trails or in areas designated for cross-country use.

Note: An ORV license is not required for street-licensed vehicles used on the frozen surface of public waters or designated ORV routes.

That sounds great ! The trail more in likely that I'll be on ,is the Snow mobil trails with no gates on them at all.

The trail must exist on a map. I found this out the hard way. I was offroading with two of my brothers inlaw and we went on this one hill that had a trail going up and down it. At the end was a DNR officer waiting for us. We both got tickets for $105. Basiclly all trails are considered closed to full size vehicle unless it is posted as open.

We tried to fight the tickets but lost. The statement from the judge was get a map.

This was in the West Branch area.

Darn that cost more then my poaching fine I got on Lake Erie a few years ago (1 fish to small cost me $95 ) Boy My wife was mad at me :twisted:

That's the difference between the Upper and Lower. In the UP the state land routes are 'open unless posted closed' and in the Lower they're 'closed unless posted open.' The tree huggers in the lower peninsula go out and destory the signs that say trails are open so they can 'close' them.

On National Forest land the rules are different - check with the local ranger station to make sure as it seems every year the feds close more and more land to off road use.

You can get a ORV sticker at Meijers. I grabbed on last year when going to the Mounds. Gotta go to the Outdoors section of the store (where the guns, camping equipment are).

Yeah, those trails (snowmobile) are shared with CAMBA who maintains them as MTB trails. I often see park rangers in the area because it's so close to the boating dock...
Have you fuond anything near the area to wheel? I'm in Stow all the time for work, but never tried going offroad in the area just because I'm pretty sure it's not legal anywhere...
