Post subject:  4x4 shops around Indianapolis? Wanna swap front springs.
I'm looking for a shop that can remove my struts, swap out the springs, and then reinstall the struts. A well-equipped garage that knows suspensions should be able to handle this in about an hour, right? I'm thinking $100 is a fair labor charge for 1-1.5 hours of work. Does anyone know of a mechanic in central Indiana who can do this for a good price? PFM wants $270. I haven't checked with 4 Wheel Parts yet, but I imagine they're just as high.

If I wasn't so busy, I'd try to set up a mini lift party, but my weekends are booked pretty solid until the first of November. Don't wanna wait that long. I want to replace my lowered '03 front springs with those from a prelowered '02 KJ to level out my 1.5"/2.0" Daystar lift. I like the back end just fine, but another half-inch up front would be perfect for my purposes.

Please, let's not turn this into a clevis lift discussion. I'm not interested.

I have not had any work done around here but I have talked to a few 4x4 people. I talked with Pete at Trucks in Action ( http://www.trucksinaction4x4.com/ ). Alljeep gave me their # and they have worked on several KJs. I also talked to Dave and Michelle Johnson at Performance Offroad in Frankin ( http://www.performanceoffroadindy.com/ ). They have never worked on KJs which scares me but he is very friendly, cheap ($50/hour) and has worked on 4x4s. Hope that helps you and goodluck.

Do you already have the pre-lowered springs? If not, how bad do you need a set..? I have a set of prelowered springs/struts laying around (as well as some rears)...I may be able to cut you a deal. 8) Get back to me if you're interested.

I'm undecided about installing prelowered springs, but if I do decide to, I may just wait until I replace my shocks and struts since removing springs is part of the job anyway. With almost 55,000 miles on them, my shocks and struts will soon be due for replacement. (Depending on who you ask, I'm overdue already.) I'd like to upgrade my shocks and struts now, but as long as they're still working properly -- and they are because I rarely carried any kind of load in the KJ -- it's hard for me to justify the expense with a new baby on the way, another kid needing school clothes, higher minivan payment, etc. . . . there's always something more important than Liberty mods. :(

BUT, I will say this: When the factory shocks are dead, I'm definitely ugprading. What's a good front shock that's better than stock, is lift friendly, and not as expensive as the Old Man Emu? (If money were no object, I'd go straight for the full OME kit w/925 and 947 springs, and NS131/NS132 shocks.) Right now I'm thinking of going with Rancho RSX 17004 rear and RSX 17505 front.

So I guess the Question of the Day is, "What's the best way to brake a shock absorber?" :twisted:

As far as front struts go (some call them shocks, other call them struts since it's an assembly)....I've heard good things about the ranchos. I have the OME struts in mine and absolutely love them....mated to the NP132L long travel rears. Of course that is pretty pricey like you said....ask my wallet... :lol:

I know the rear RSX 17004s are very affordable but I dont know anything about the front struts. I believe you can get the rears thru/ Summit or Jegs...can't remember which one.

the front Rancho struts/shocks are great in my book, ride good and I have the OME Heavy duty coils I would buy them again unless I get a huge raise ! :lol:

I had a dead shock in the front at 60,000 when I lifted. Normal wear and tear, in fact a lot of highway driving must have done it in.

Well, the sooner "normal wear and tear" busts one of those Mopar shocks, the sooner I can justify upgrading to Ranchos all around. At that time, I will pair up some prelowered front springs with my 1.5" Daystar spacer and have a nice, even 2" of lift all around. I gotta find some deep potholes or ruts around here somewhere! 8)
