There seems to be some stirs as to what some yahoo down in DBNF is doing....

I will keep up with this and call on Monday. The short version for those who don't want to read the links:
1) some environmental nut at the Livingston office has "closed" Comer Ridge (illegally?) because of inpact to the rockcastle river from runoff.
2) some knowledgable folks ar kentuky krawlers know this guy, and thik this is illegal for them to close county roads.
3) it's unclear if this closure includes our fall's city road that we allways run
4) I'm going to call and find out on Monday - details to follow

This is, of course, an ongoing topic.

Whats interesting about this, is that I'm not sure if it effects the normal, public roads within DBNF that you have to have a highway legal vehicle for. That is what we are mostly on.

Take a look at this link from the first page linked above. The red text at the bottom sums up some things.

Also, this link : http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/boone/recreation/cromer.shtml it states this: "Under Kentucky state law, OHV/ATV use is prohibited on private land without permission from the landowner. On open public roads, motorized use is limited to motor vehicles and operators in full compliance with the Kentucky Department of Transportation. State regulations require street legal motor vehicles that are properly equipped, licensed, and insured. Vehicle operators must have a valid state driver's license."

When they talk about OHV/ATV that really doesnt apply to us. We should only really be concerned about closure of public forest service roads.

That kinda sounds like, "no ATVs or buggies etc., just street legal vehicles only on designated roads"

I guess its really impossible to tell without going there and seeing exactly what has been done; or maybe a simple phone call is in order before the next trip. Although we always have that new trail we found last time, which is not in this Cromer Ridge area.

The Diamond trail which we take(stair steps) is still open. The 'play ground' is closed. I posted a thread about this not long ago. Read this:

It may be coming to an end soon though. I was down there about a month ago and I couldnt find my way around since they put gravels down on that road. I didnt have my GPS so I left before I got lost.

It turns out that Laurel county had dropped claim to the Fall's City road. So that means that if you are on it, you are on private property (which is illegal). The NFS is removing it from the MVUM in the next version, and maybe Horse Creek (the new one we found that Jackson county is thinking about dropping). So the bottom line is this: DBNF is closed to Jeeps. If they have a road, it has to be 2wd friendly (and thus, litigation friendly). So they are either dropping them or fixing them. We may be able to run the Horse Creek once before that is closed, but we are looking at Wellsville, Hills-n-hollars, WindRock, Haspin, Badlands, or Harlin as were we are going to be locked into (oh, and that place in WV where the MuddyBuddies went instead of Livingston).

I think I need to move out west. This sux.

oh man. that really really sucks. i'm just glad i decided to go lots of times this year. i managed to hit it up 4 times all in 07. too bad that will be the last... :cry:

As a longtime hiker, I am sure this change will be cheered in some circles. I also have seen the problems that can come from limiting the use of public land. I have first hand experience of this in Africa but that is another story. It is sad because I know we always left those trails in better condition then we found them (ie. removing trash). :cry:

Oh well, with the price of gas... I should be speding more time in the garden anyway...
