Post subject:  Carrieville, Michigan Run - June 10-11
OK everyone -

I've decided to start a new thread for this trip. I will be going to Carrieville for camping and wheelin' June 10-11. More than likely I will leave Chicago on Friday, but that depends on what my schedule is as we get closer.

*Camping Fee is $10
*4 1/2 hrs from Wrigley Field in Chicago (I had to use Luther, MI for Rand McNally because Carrieville, MI was not recognized.)
*Just spoke w. Todd Niese (sp?) at the DNR (231-775-9727) - the campground has been improved, there are now 31 spots (he said the best is a big spot at the back of the grounds right next to the river), there are fire rings and picnic tables at every site. Only 2 vehicles per spot, but there is parking such that more people could be at one site. It can get pretty busy and is first come, first serve. Looks like I'll be going up Friday.
*An ORV sticker is required. The sticker costs $16.25 and is good for a season (not just once).

It's about 240 miles for me, about 4 hours, so almost the same distance as from Chicago.
I'd be game for heading up sometime Friday and camping Fri & Sat nites, then head home Sunday morning/early afternoon.

SunDvl, if you don't mind I'll try to get more info, such as check in and check out times and if a person can reserve more than one site.
If anyone can think of other things to ask the DNR, just post em here.

I have no idea how quickly these sites fill up on the weekends, so hopefully anyone arriving Friday can reserve sites for those arriving Saturday so they are sure to have a place to camp.

The trails are the little manistee trail system, this is a mixed traffic trail both quads and trucks share.

There is an additional trail system located just south around the lake. Please see map above.

Little Manistee 46 miles
Tin Cup Spring 21 miles
Lincoln Hills 21miles

Carrieville camping is very small, there is a gas station across the road, and that is about it.

Additional camping can be found at Baldwin State forest Camp ground.
I will dig out my camping book if more sights are needed.

If anyone is into fishing there are several small lakes in the area.

The trails are pretty well monitored so -off trail excursions would not be a good idea.

I double checked, NO ORV sticker required - only valid state tags needed.

Like a IN state license tag? Is there a Michigan tag or something else I need to buy to wheel on this trip?

According to the DNR, DMV licensed vehicles do not need any other requirements. The "sticker" that is required is for ATV's and other non-licensed vehicles.

If the trail is designated as ORV Route, then a ORV sticker is needed. Trails that are designated as ORV Trail are for Quads and Motorcycles.

I was ticketed last summer for driving where I shouldn't have. :evil: The way MI law is stated is a regular 2 wheel vehicle should be able to go down the trail.

So what are these trails like? Rocky, muddy or ??? I will have the lift on but no skids also just Destination ATs so would I do OK or what ? Does anyone know? Do not want to come up only to find its too muddy for the ATs or too many big old rocks and tear everything out from under my baby! :) :? 20/25 years ago I would of just went for it regardless, hate getting older and more responsible! :lol: :lol: :lol:
So has anyone been on these that can let me know?

I called the DNR and got some info.

#1,,,,,, It literally is first come, first served. You CANNOT reserve a site for anyone not yet there, even if you pay for them.

#2,,,,,,,, An ORV license is required if you go offroad on the trails. These things cost $16.25 for a year.
There is no charge to just access the campsite.

So, bottom line, hope there is a campsite available when you arrive or have plan B in effect for someplace to camp out.

I'm still going. 8)

Please keep in mind - they had 8-10" of packed snow on them when I was there last.

There are some good inclines, very twisty sections, muddy sections, should be fun.

But, I did not notice any rocks of significant size nor anything that would require a winch.

I'm not sure about this yet. I have to see how the job searching comes along. With me being laid off right now, it's tuff to tell. Few jobs I've interviewed for, you have to work weekends.

sounds pretty cool a may be able to make it.... for one I would feel weird being the youngest guy there, and 2 my Libby is all stock, cant take it wheeling.... if I get some other transportation I would be more than happy to join in.
