That's right, I had to get pulled up a hill by the Liberty... Trust me, I wasn't happy. This was a manageable hill, maybe 35 degrees, that the Patriot CVT simply would not climb. I already emailed Jeep and posted on the JeepPatriot.com forum. Some have said they have not had this problem on long steep hills with the CVT. I'm wondering if Altitude is a contributing factor, or if my CVT is defunkt. It was embarrassing.
Otherwise, the ride went VERY well. Darryl, Denise and I took over 150 pics! We did not do Loch Lomond because I have been there the last two weeks, and I thought it would be a little rough for Darryl's first time O/R. Little did we know, the trails I chose were 'almost' as rough! We started out in Central City by taking Bald Mountain Rd around to the abandon town of Nevadaville. This loop lead us back into Central City, so we headed toward Apex. Eventually we landed ourselves on FR 353 to Kingston Peak. Along the way we saw Mile High Jeep Club, with about 50 members, stopped for lunch. We stopped to allow them to pass us and got some good shots of their crew. Then we headed up to the Rock Memorial overlooking Loch Lomond and Fall River Res. We then continued down to Alice.
This is where we SHOULD have just come down out of the mountains, but NOOOOOO, I had to check out Hamlin Gulch Rd which led us into York Gulch Trail. It wasn't bad until it started raining. Then we came to IT... A rock outcrop that puts you inches from rolling down the mountain, and I mean inches. Add in the root that when wet slides you toward the cliff! We made it over, not wanting to back down the trail and hoping it would get better. We found a split in the road and opted for the main trail which took us face to face with a severe rock outcrop that on a dry day the Patriot might have made. It was too risky, we had to back down the trail about 600'. Denise spotted us and got soaked, she's a trooper! We then took the other option which dead ended. So, we had to go back over the death trap and eventually made it off the mountain. It was VERY stressful, especially in the rain.
We then went to the Cheshire Cat in Arvada and met up with Scott and his uncle John from southern Illinois. Dave, a friend of Scott's friend from Expeditions West (?) also joined us. We had a good time swapping stories and checking out each other's rides.
Darryl and I considered starting a new club, the Jeep Outlaws, for stockish vehicles. What do ya think?!?!!? LMFAO. Denise said we looked like the Mafia rollin' in our black Jeeps, I have to admit, it did look pretty cool. And the looks I got from Mile High were priceless!!!
