We didn't make it very far that snowy day.The gate was closed, but we unknowingly drove over the snowdrift that was covering it.

Stuck......I don't recall almost getting stuck...

wheeler is a great trail. wouldn't bother taking fishing gear though...i have yet to see anyone catch anything out of the lake.

obstacle 1 has 2 lines...hard on the right and easy on the left. Obstacle 2 has 3 lines. Left is hard, center is the easiest and will probably catch a stockers tub and to the right is the crack which isnt really hard but if you slip into the crack you will probably flatten both doors.

here is a pic of obstacle 2 (this is the left line, you can see the easy line in front of the black nissan).
Image

and here is the crack (you can see where someone has stacked rocks behind the nissan to get up the easy line without catching the rockers)
Image

just before the lake is obstacle #3 called bowling ball hill. it is a long gradual uphill climp full of rocks the size of (yep you guessed it...) bowling balls and larger. plan on beating on some skids. open and lsd diff will have the most fun as the balls roll around under the kj.

here is a pic going down the hill.. Image

more pics can be seen here http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v169/Colorado59/Wheeler%20Lake%207-2-06/

knowing how the kj tranny is just sitting there waiting to be smashed, i would at least have full skids and rails. a bit of lift would definitely help too

Thanks, kevh, for that trail report. I'm going to keep those notes about which lines are what. I'm sure we could figure it out once we got there, but having never been ther myself, I'll take all the hints I can get. I think everyone that is planning on going already has the necessary equipment to make it through there in one piece. Are you going to make the trip?

I was giving a local guy some pointers on installing his XJ lift, and met a couple of his buddies. Probably two or three of them might join us. One has a real nice LJ Rubicon Unlimited, one has a TJ, and then the XJ guy who was putting his lift on. I don't know if his jeep will be ready. Well it will be lifted, but it won't have armor, so I don't consider that really ready.:D Oh, xjrrrdx (Jared with XJ on 34's) is coming, as long as his XJ doesn't break down again like it did trying to go to the Argentine Pass run. What about Winegurl and those others that said they wanted to go when we did Bill Moore Lake.?

Here are the directions for traildamage:

"From I-70, exit on Route 9 south to Breckenridge. Go through the town on the main road and go up Hoosier Pass. Take Road 4 west to Montgomery Reservoir. The trail starts at the north end of the Reservoir.

From the south, take Highway 285 to Fairplay, then Route 9 north to Road 4 on the left, just after you start to climb up to Hoosier Pass.

Meeting Places

If you're taking I-70 meet at exit 234 at the Downieville Starbucks. If you want to take Highway 285, meet in Conifer at the Bradley gas station or at the Safeway and Starbucks."

I'll let you Denver guys figure out where you want to meet. Colorado Springs area guys, we could meet at the McDonalds in Woodland Park at 7:30 and caravan from there. I will be leaving for Woodland Park from my place by 7:00 if any of the guys want to meet here first between 6:30 and 7:00. That should put us at the trail head between 9:30 and 10.

Who's going to lead the Denver bunch? Let's do Channel 16 on the CB. County Road 6 is the road to the trail head. There is a clearing right off 9 on CR6 that we can meet and run to the trailhead which starts on the other side of the Montgomery Reservoir. Let's plan to meet at that clearing by 1030. Ted, Troy, Pete and I will be coming up from the Springs. I posted possible meeting places for the Denver guys that TrailDamage recommends. I'll let you guys take charge on that meeting.

Looks like I won't be able to make it. Friend asked me to help him move in with another friend. He just broke up with his live-in gf and it's her place. Sorry for last minute notice but he just asked me an hour ago.
