I think to be considered "easy" by that book it has to be a dirt road, no rocks at all, and 20 feet wide!

Well, it wouldn't be a LOST Rockies run unless something happened to someone's KJ. Quivvy encountered, what might have been an altitude adjustment problem on his KJ, and had power steering fluid splash all over the engine and belts. LOST his Power steering You have now been initiated, Quivvy. Welcome to LOST Rockies.....hahaha! J/k I hope the problem is nothing serious and you made it back to Boulder safely. Weather was really dreary and wet at the meeting point (Morrison Park and Ride) but looked good when blue skies and sun came out as we worked our way to the trail. Unfortunately, just as we got on the trail, we LOST Quivvy to his steering issue and we quickly LOST the sun and blue skies as clouds poured in around us making for a foggy run. At least the wind was not bad like our last try on this run. This run should be rated "EASY" not moderate in the trail book. As we made our way through the backside after seeing the mailbox and rock building, the fog/clouds left us with absolutely no view of anything more than a couple hundred yards. We found a couple of bumps to take some 3-wheel poser shots but nothing of interest until we discovered the three large water holes. One was the size of a large pond and the other two were right in the path of the trail so we had a lot of fun splashing through them. The water was about mid-tire deep and muddy (not mud-caking type). I got a picture of USAFCOP splashing through one of them but the water sprayed so much, you can't see his KJ. I decided to try the largest water hole and drove through it slowly. The water was about top-of-the-tire deep and soft underneath. Made it with no problems. I forgot to have someone take a picture. The fog was so bad though. You would have had a hard time seeing my KJ wading in the water. Once we got onto the hardpack road, you could tell there would've been some awesome photo shots of the scenery, but the fog just made it look "nice." We arrived at Rollinsville and aired back up at the local quickie shop and made our way home. A few ATV/motorcycle guys, chilling at the mailbox, were surprised we were off-roading with KJ's and a guy in a Land Rover was surprised about our KJ's also. As I mentioned, this trail is rather simple in this "beginner's" opinion. I can see where snow storms can make it hard but all in all, a completely stock KJ could do the trail. |

glad you guys had a good time. im bummed the KJ was gimped. anyway, we gimped it back to OPE'S where i called jeep roadside assistance, they sent a flat bed and brought me back to boulder fortunately (with a little weaseling on my part). at OPE's we figured out that one of the power steering fluid lines was actually right up agaisnt the serpentine belt and looked like it had been there since its creation. it just took 21K miles to wear a hole clean through it. the dealership temporarily patched it and re-filled 'er up so i can gimp around for the weekend. i bring it back monday to get it fixed. im bummed that jeep looked over that when it was built, but stuff happens i guess. thanks guys, it was nice meeting everyone. post some pics! |
