I saw a thread on this in the general forum. Just wondering what everyone is using around here.

I have been using 87 mid-grade since new.

Since we now get to pay more for gas then the rest of the country  (Ohio is running around $2.00 per gallon!!) I was wondering if it is worth it to continue to pay for the 87 octane?

I bought my jeep in CA, where the options were 87, 89, and 91. When I moved to NM, the options were 86,88, and 90. I just figured that with the CA emissions package I better go 88...was I wrong?

Not sure about the CA emissions, but in Colorado you can get away with the lower octane fuel because of the higher elevation.

Denver is at 5280(Mile High City). Skyjump is "down in the Springs", elevation of 6035 ft.

And when we do our runs out here in CO most are on the 7000-11000ft range.

Our manual recommends mid-grade if we are towing or driving in mountainous terrain.

I use 85 most of the time but use 87 octane (or top off with 91 to split the difference) when I go into the mountains.
I have noticed a difference when going up the steep grades along I-70 and other roads. I had a tank full of the 85 octane one time and the Jeep seemed a lot more sluggish going up Floyd Hill on my way up to Jones Pass. I have made this runs a few times which is why I noticed the difference.

At altitude the octane can be reduced, I used 85 in my '98 TJ for years. But now I have a CRD
