front Range / Breck 4x4ing

so i have now missed to 4x4 outings and with a my new tires and lift .... I WANA GO :twisted:

my dad is in town from wisconsin and i was thinking of running goergia pass on sunday the 18th. i know its not that hard .... heck i did it in a chevy avalache 2 years ago .... but its nice ride in the mountains

i'm thinking of departing castle rock for I70 and then taking US6 over loveland pass. then down to breck for a snack. then up and over georgia pass.

i like georgia pass cuz it drops you on 285 and its an easy ride back to denver.

anyone interested or have other suggestions (with an easy return to denver area)

sorry, we are gonna be up at Grand Lake this weekend. But I'm sure I will see you on another trail ride.

What kind of tires did you get?

I just bought a set of new Rubicon wheels and new MTR's for $800 and installed them in the garage tonight. Missed the first football game darn it! Ready to give them a try...but not on an easy trail.

800 wow .... thats a good price. the best i could find was a grand. i so wanted those wheels. do you have any rubbing issues.

i got the general grabber at2 in a 255/70-16 and but them on my stock crd rims. i really like the look and the tread pattern.

A guy was selling the Rubi's and MTR's (all 5 wheels and tires) on www.Colorado 4x4.org for that price. He lives in Littelton and didn't want to deal with shipping so he offered them locally for that price. I could not pass up a price like that. Five MTR's alone will cost about that price.

He bought a new Wrangler Rubicon and drove it from the dealer to a 4x4 shop and had a big lift and huge tires put on it. So the Rubi/MTR's only had ~25 miles on them. Still had the nubby rubber fingers and rubber flaps on them (when tires are new).

I haven't driven the KJ yet. I will today to test rubbing and get the rubbing marks on the wheel wells so I know where to make mods. I need to get an impact wrench. I don't plan to keep them on for daily driving. I will use my stocks for that. Only put the Rubi/MTR's on when going off-roading.

It took me about an 1hr 15 minutes to remove the stocks and install the Rubi/MTR's (including the spare) in my tight one-car garage, w/o an impact wrench.

unless you already have air tools and the compress to match i wouldnt waist the money.

i use my cordless drills. both are 18v. one is Milwaukee and one is DeWalt. i got an adaptor for a 1/2in socket to a 1/2in impact wrench for 5 bucks and just use my normal 19mm socket. i loosen the lugs with a 2 foot breaker bar. jack up the lib. use the drill to spin off the nuts. rotate tires. then use the drill to put the nuts on. drop the jeep and torque with hand torque wrench. personally i'll never use an air wrench to torque lugnuts.

I got 5 MTRs and Rubi rims for $600 earlier this summer...I had to drive to Cheyenne, but it's the best deal I've seen anyone get!

I'll have to ask my wife about this weekend. We already did that very same run this year so I'm leaning towards being a "no".

Would you be willing to try another trail? Perhaps Skyjump will join in then?

If you look at the "Colorado Backroads & 4-wheel drive Trails Vol 1 & 2"
you will need to know that the author rates the trails harder than they really are when doing them. He rated Kingston Peak and North Supply Creek as moderate trails. To me, Kingston was rather easy. Someone just did North Supply Creek and said it was EASY.

Since you live in Castle Rock , how about trying Longwater Gulch or Hackett Gulch or back towards Idaho Springs and do Spring Creek?

Anyone drive these trails before?

i'm open to suggestions. i just dont wana freak out my dad .... LOL

i did kingston two months ago and it really sucked. i had no lift and beat the piss out of my skid plates on the way down. not to mention i got stuck in 2ft of snow and had to get dug/pulled out

i have one of those books but i dont remember witch one. i have the book the covers kingston in it.

lets hear the suggestions and info on the trails .....

There was deep snow there two weeks ago? WoW! A few of us were there about 4 weeks ago and there was a huge watering hole on the trial, down. Lots of fun but too cloudy to get a decent picture (see the one I posted in LOST Rockies).

You are lifted now so it won't be so bad.

There is snow up in the mountains now, so a moderate might be a better choice.

Yes, North Supply Creek was cake. Honestly I was so bored I just kept hoping we'd reach the end. I did it without the rockrails (which are re-installed now, btw) and one quick spot from my wife. Half hour up and 15 minutes back down. It took 3 times that long just to drive out there.

I think we can do something on Sunday, but I just don't want to repeat a trail that we've done recently. I'd like to do something relatively close (Idaho Springs or closer).

TokyoJoe: It wasn't the steepness, it was the size of the rocks. The uneveness of the terrain caused wheel spin. That sucks when you need both pushing/pulling to grab any available traction. Stupid open diff!

Where is everyone? We have quite a few Colorado front range folks but only hearing from about 4 people.

Off-roading this Sunday, let's plan for the usual?

I-70 Morrison exit parking lot (next to the off-ramp) at 9am
This exit is just before you get to the steep mountain climb on I-70 and before Lookout mountain.

We can pull out our books and decide on a trail then...if that's okay with gundrted.

9am sounds good to me. you're talking about the parking lot on the northeast corner of the off ramp.

i would also wana vote for staying somewhat close to denver but far enough to not be in a sea of off-raoders

there is one thing .... no making fun of my rock rails. i got a really good deal on them and they sent me the wrong ones

i'm still fighting to get the right ones.

i'm almost to the point of keeping them and replacing them in a year or two. unless i start doing more 4x4ing.

I still have the Powertax, but I am hesitant to reinstall due to the hard shifting it causes in the manual tranny. This is the wifes daily driver. With the weather we get here, I don't want any issues for her and my little girl.
So, North Supply is a peice of cake. That means I can do it alone? I am stayin' about 2miles from where we got stuck in the snow that day.

Yep, we did it alone. There's one spot that you *might* need a locker or lsd, but if you can't make it there's a road that goes the same place and can be used as an alternate.

There were some fun mud puddles on the way down (So. Supply Creek) so pray for rain!
