Any electricians in here?

Hey, guys, as most of you all already know, we're moving to CO. I need to find someone who knows how to hook up a 220V outlet in a garage, or can offer some advice on the best way to do it. I don't get along very well with electricity, so someone else is probably going to do the install. I'm thinking just have the electric company put a separate meter outside the garage and put a breaker and 220 plug in the garage, which will also help keep the business electric expenses somewhat separate from the house. Any thoughts?

I know a guy. He's a close friend and a wheeling buddy of mine. He use to be an electrician at one point, but I know he can get you taken care of.

Where are you moving to? He and I are located in the Longmont area (which is north of Denver probably 20 miles or so).

I was an electrician when I was in the Navy. Basics are the same but home wiring codes are different from ships.

It woun't be hard to wire it and place the outlet. The main point is to have a breaker setup. You have to completely shut down the breaker box when everything is installed (outlet and wiring) and ready for the juice. It is the last thing you do.

What else do you need to know? You should be required to get a permit to do it (so you are covered by insurance) and there are requirements on how to run the wires and place the outlet.

you will need a permit in the springs city limits. A guy I work with was an electricianbefore he joined the AF and still does some on the side, I could talk to him.

You take 2 fingers and you lick them. Then those to fingers and walk up to elecrical box--remove outside screws holding it on and use your ac voltmeter to measure 220 volts. That is how I did a coule times. Might not be the right way but it works.

OK, so where do I get the permit (phone number and company name would be nice so I can call and get an idea first before choosing a house what is involved and how much for the permit)? Ricky5, I'm moving to CO Springs. Thanks for your help guys, anything and everything you can provide me with to get this going is appreciated. Names of people/companies and phone numbers will really help. Without that outlet, so much for business for awhile.

Um, I saw a post on another forum where a guy (former electrician of 7 years) wired 40 foor of a thick gauge wire into the box, with a large plug at the end. I guess the fuse box was farely close to the garage, and he was renting, so he wanted it easy to remove when he left or needed to. That sounds good to me, but I have to make sure it is safe. If there is one thing I am extremely afraid/paranoid of, it is fire.

That is stupid and dangerous. What if you yank on the cable? Get your foot caught in the cable and yank it exposing hot wires to the panel and then zap when you touch the panel. You also open up the breaker box to dust, which can lead to a fire.

I do mean to be harsh and say "stupid." Don't do it. I find electricians are some of the most dangerous when it comes to electrical safety. I worked as an Electrical Safety inspector.

By the way, it is snowing and the roads are covered with snow here in Denver.

That's kinda what I was thinking. Those who know what they are doing are the most likely to take the easiest shortcut, which is usually the most dangerous. Ok, so, I just need to know exactly the safest, right way to do this, and we'll be in business.

Look for the for Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce (official Springs website) and go from there for where to get the permit. Talk to Ted about his friend (as long as he is licensed to do the work). City Inspectors will have to come and inspect the completed work before you can get started. Think SAFETY. You don't want to burn your house down or worse, you, wife, or kids get electricuted.
