Colorado Trip

Hey all you Rockies out there. I'll be driving out to Denver during the second week in June to do some fly fishing at my uncle's cabin near Fairplay, CO.

My question for those in the area: Is there any wheeling opportunities on the way out of Denver on 285? What are some other options to get out on the rocks out that way?

I'd appreciate any suggestions and welcome any wheeling partners while there.

I highly recomend running Red Cone. It is spectacular! Takes you to an elevation of just about 12,000' ASL.

I'd try to drive up Mt. Bross, a "14er" just NE of Fairplay. There is a website, 14ers.com, that details the route from a hiking perspective. It's listed as a green run in the Colorado 4x4 book I have.

You will be fairly near to China Wall, which is a relative easy trail for a slightly modded (larger tires and skids) Liberty. You can do it stock but there are some areas where skids are very useful.

There is also Georgia Pass and Boreas Pass (car drive) and many others in the area. All of these are detailed in the Traildamage link.

It looks my friend and I have whittled our options down to a few light trails while we’re staying outside of Denver. We’ll most likely be on the trail(s) Monday or Tuesday, 6/9 - 6/10.

I've done China Wall, and the first few miles of Mosquito Pass up to the London Mine. Mosquito Pass is a beautiful area, and the old mine is cool to explore. Sorry I won't be able to roll with ya, gotta work the week to play on the weekends. When are you rollin through Denver, maybe we could all get together for dinner.

What is the cell phone coverage like in the mountains? Am I likely to have a signal on any of these trails?

Pretty hit or miss on coverage. China wall isn't a bad trail especially if you have to go by yourself. Wheeler lake isn't something you want to tackle alone. Real easy to end up in a big mess and not much for help or parts in the local area. It's an awesome trail, but it can tear up a KJ pretty quick. This was a trail a group of us pulled an extremely well built rock racing buggy part way down the mountain because even that rig got destroyed (pics on my website). Twin Cone I didn't run, but some of the guys did, and said it was a fun trail, but one hill was pretty rough and required some winching and a spare tire. Can't offer much on the other three trails since I haven't done those.

I was on the Twin Cone ride. RL is correct. I got high centered on a rock, Ted got his valve stem sheered off and Dave had to be winched. I think Troy was the only one who was unscathed. No major damage, you just need a crew and time to get over the slidey stuff.

Didn't make it to the other trails listed above, with Twin Cone so close, and many of the locals telling me that snow still covered most of the ones we discussed anyway.
Trail head to North Twin Cone Peak within a few miles of the cabin where I stayed:

Not the smartest thing to do, jeeping with only one vehicle - after this stuck, we turned around and headed down the mountain. Almost a 4 hour round trip to this point, still 3/4 of a mile from the peak. Others in the area claim that the back side of the mountain is still covered in snow and impassible.

More county roads at 10,000+ elevation - a scenic return to the cabin.

The fishing hole - our catch were two stringers with rainbow and brown trout, later cooked over the campfire

Up route 40 over Hoosier Pass to Winter Park - the last day spent in the mountains

Red Rocks Amphitheatre - always impressive

Looks like a great trip. Was that the Brewers the Rockies were playing? Nice catch on the stringers and trout.

One typo I noticed: "Up route 40 over Hoosier Pass to Winter Park - the last day spent in the mountains" CO 9 goes from Fairplay/Alma over Hoosier Pass north to Breckenridge. It is US 40 that goes from I-70 north to Winter Park over Berthoud Pass.

We did Twine Cone last Fall. Not sure where that mud spot was where you got stuck. You missed out on some awesome views at the top.

I was at the Rockies-Brewers game on the Friday night they played.
