For the last 2 years we have spent 10 days in Silverton in July.

Is anyone going in July 2006?

We missed the group trip last July because the dates changed pretty late and we already had reservations for a week or 2 before. It would be nice if the dates could be firmed up in time to get reservations.

Bill,

We are looking into making this our LOST Rockies annual event. We are still working (extremely slow) on getting organzied and choosing an annual run. A few of us have talked about doing it at the same time the big Jeep event is held there annually. We shall see. Keep an eye on our group for future decisions.

I, for one, plan on making it this year especially since it's starting to look like I won't be making Moab this year. Since I will have to put in for leave a ways out, I'd also like to nail down the dates.

I would not like to see it at the same time as the big Jeep event since it is difficult to get reservations in an RV park at any time and I suspect it would be even harder during a big event.

I had the same problem with Moab for 2006, some of the RV parks were already booked solid. We will be in Moab for 2 weeks and had to slide our dates back by 5 days just to get in an RV park. Fortunately that puts in Moab just before the LOST run starts and for a few days after.

Silverton is even harder to get into in the Summer. I suspect Ouray will be sold out also during the Jeep event.

There is also the issue of trail crowding. There was a traffic jam at the start of Engineer Pass on a Tuesday morning last July and there was no special event going on. I sure wouldn't want to run Black Bear if there was a crowd on it.

I agree, we should try a less popular time. Yes the "show of force" for the LOST group would be nice, but I hate to be in large crowds and the trails are a lot less fun when they resemble I-5 rush hour in Seattle!

Since I am back in Albuquerque I could see doing this trip; it would just depend on what time I can get off from work (which is a big question since i don't currently have a job). I'll keep an eye on the L.O.S.T. Rockies forum for more info.

I would even make it in my Cherokee if I would be allowed tp run with you all. The dates would defently have to be way in advance to ensure time off from work, I didn't get to go everywhere I want to last time up there.

Ron, you know us better than that! No Jeep-ism here. Once you're lost, you're lost for life.

They have put up with me and my Wrangler for the last 2 or 3 years so I know they are a tolerant group!

Bring the Cherokee and we will have lots of fun. We will be in the Rubicon.

We were leaving and cruising the campgrounds last year looking for Eddo.

Could we possible meet at Animas forks or the Visitors center in Silverton.
Thanks, Don

In Silverton the Visitors Center is the best place to meet. Plenty of parking in the mornings and easy to find.

Does anyone remember what the dates were last year? Since we changed the forum to the new server the posts from back then are no longer available.

Since we are talking about the dates, is there any chance we can do it sometime in the first 2 weeks of the month? I think most of us can work our vacation time to start around the July 4th weekend. What does everyone else think? Am I wrong about this?

I understand about the 4th and vacations but, there are a couple of potential problems.

If they have a heavy snow year in Colorado some of the good trails won't open until mid-July.

For instance the report for Black Bear Pass for 2005:
7/24/05 - Open according to the Forest Service.
7/15/05 - Snow. Snow. More snow.
6/29/05 - Still socked in by snow.

Note that it was not open on the 15th. We were in Silverton at that time and I think it actually opened on the 19th.

You can see the trail reports from 2005 at http://bushducks.com/tripreps/passopen.htm

We ran Black Bear on July 12, 2003 and it had been open for 2 days then.

Other BIG problem is you had better plan on sleeping in a tent around the 4th of July there won't be a room available anywhere and the RV parks will be full. Plus the crowds will be bad in both Silverton and Ouray.

It is hard to get reservations in Silverton during the Summer and Ouray has a big 4th of July celebration and is probably already booked solid.

The 3rd or 4th week of July is better for the trails and a few less folks.

Later in July is better for us. We get back from Cabo San Lucas the last week of June. So a little time between the to trips would be needed for me.

I am about to decide on the third week in July, 15th thru 23rd.

I have a 14 year old Grandson that I will be bringing and need to start making plans for that.
