BLUERIBBON COALITION ACTION ALERT!

Dear BRC Action Alert Subscriber,

Dolores Public Lands Office Seeks Input on Boggy-Glade Travel Management Plan

The San Juan National Forest, located in the southwestern corner of Colorado, announced that the Dolores Public Lands Office is seeking public comments to assist in development of the Boggy-Glade Travel Management Plan.

The proposal includes approximately 238,334 acres of National Forest lands in the Boggy Draw, McPhee and Glade areas. Specific actions include:

Maintain the existing National Forest System Roads (NFSR) as identified on the 2005 San Juan National Forest Visitor Use Map.

Eliminate areas currently identified as open to cross-country motorized travel on the 2005 San Juan National Forest Visitor Use Map.

Identify additional big game security areas north of McPhee Reservoir.

Allow dispersed camping 300 feet from centerline on either side of system roads.

Restrict overnight camping at all trailheads and day-use areas.

Prohibit dispersed camping along the following NFSRs: Lone Dome Road #504 (from the intersection of NFSR #521 to McPhee Dam); the entire Sage Hen area; system roads within the McPhee Recreation Area (NFSRs #271 - #274); House Creek Road #528 (from the intersection with road #529D to the House Creek Campground); and within the Glade Guard Station Administrative boundary.

Designate a non-motorized trail connecting Ferris Campground to Salter Canyon.

Designate the existing non-motorized trail system at Sage Hen.

Designate non-motorized trail opportunities around McPhee Reservoir, connecting the Town of Dolores to House Creek Campground including a link to the current Little Bean Trail. This non-motorized trail opportunity would then continue around McPhee Reservoir, ultimately connecting to the existing trail system at Sage Hen.

Designate the Glade OHV Trail from Five Pine Canyon north to the Forest boundary.

Create additional off-road motorized vehicle (OHV) opportunities linking the existing Boggy Draw OHV Trail to areas on the Glade.

Improve opportunities to link Lone Mesa State Park to adjacent National Forest system routes.

Create a small parking area for winter and summer use at the junction of Cottonwood Road #532 and the West Dolores Road.
Allow snow removal along the Dolores-Norwood Road #526 from the compressor station at the Cottonwood Road #532 junction north to the Forest Service boundary.

Evaluate the transfer of jurisdictional rights of the Dolores-Norwood Road #526 from the Forest Service to Montezuma County and Dolores County.
Evaluate boater/fisherman access at all existing ramps and day-use areas.

Enhance whitewater opportunities along the Dolores River adjacent to Cabin Campground.

Identify areas to decommission existing system and non-system routes that provide duplicate travel ways to the same destination.

Parking off of a designated route for purposes of day-use activities would be allowed within one vehicle length from the edge of the system route.

A copy of the Scoping Letter and Map are available at the Dolores Public Lands Office, or on the San Juan National Forest website at: http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/sanjuan/projects/projects.shtml.

Comments on the proposal are requested in writing to: ATTN: Boggy-Glade TMP, Dolores Public Lands Office, 29211 Highway 184, Dolores, CO 81323, by June 8, 2009. Comments will be used to shape the Environmental Assessment (EA), further develop the proposed action, and frame alternatives. The preliminary ER should be available by late July, with a decision expected by September.

For more information about the Boggy - Glade Travel Management Plan, please feel free to contact Penny Wu at the Dolores Office, 970-882-7296.

COMMENT DEADLINE IS JUNE 8, 2009

JUST REMEMBER, PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT IS CRUCIAL TO KEEP RECREATION AREAS OPEN, PLEASE GET INVOLVED!

Thanks in advance for your support,
Ric Foster
