Summary:
We are going to meet at IHOP in American Fork at 8 am on Saturday, August 27, for breakfast. We can hang out there for a while, and then those who would like to spend the day up American Fork Canyon will head up the trail to Forest Lake, and then Mineral Basin.

Trail to Forest Lake: Would probably be rated a 3.5 in Moab. Probably doable in a stock KJ, but fairly difficult. Recovery points (tow hooks) required, and full skids highly recommended. Lift and rear locker will allow you to complete the trail without help, but we'll have straps.
Trail to Mineral Basin: 4 or 4+ by Moab scale. No way a stock KJ would make it without serious damage. Lift, full skids, and recovery points required. Rear locker very helpful. Even with all of those mods we'll probably need to pull out the straps to get everyone across the Rock Garden. But the reward is spectacular scenery, and bragging rights.

There will probably be some empty seats if anyone would like to ride shotgun. I plan to take at least my two boys (5 and 7), and hopefully my wife will come with our 2 year-old girl.

Even if you can't hit the trails with us, I hope you'll meet us for breakfast and claim your free LOST Rockies decal!

Original message:
Hey, we're getting a pretty good list of SLC-area KJ owners now...how about getting together for breakfast and a quick run up AF Canyon one of these Saturday mornings?

My thought is that we could have breakfast at 7 or 8 am at the Denny's at I-15 and 10600 South (early so that Krazz1e can be there...he works on Saturdays). We can hang out there for a while and talk about mods, and people smarter than me can answer any technical questions 8). And then those of us who want to add some custom pinstripes to our KJs can run up to Forest Lake. (Then the more adventurous could head up to Mineral Basin.)

The Forest Lake trail is somewhat challenging this year, but I think a stock KJ can make it (with skillful driving and spotting). (I did most of it all by myself, but my KJ is modded a bit.)

Thoughts? If Denny's still has their Grand Slam breakfast for under $3, it would be a cheap get-together, and fairly centrally-located.

I'll even throw in a LOST Rockies decal for everyone that shows up! (Don't worry, I'll true up the accounts so that the LOST Rockies treasury doesn't take the hit. ;) )

I'd probably drag my boys along (5 and 7), so feel free to bring your kids if you like.

That's great, Krazz1e...I might be able to go play around this Saturday, if you're game.

OK, everyone else, this is silly...I went through the memberlist and found 9 of us here in the SLC area (that's not counting anyone that didn't put Utah in their profiles). Surely more than just Krazz1e and myself want to get together.

I'm going to send private messages to the other 7, and then maybe even send e-mails (if I'm feeling particularly obnoxious.)

Let's go wheelin'!

This Sat huh.. hmm, well my wife was thinking of us hiking up timpanogas cave, which is in the same area :D

But if we can gather up some more folks lets do it next weekend?

Troy you've install your locker yourself right? I might need your help doing my soon, I am saving up my pennies and almost have it.

By the way, I am planning on hitting Moab 1 more time this year, probably mid-sept doing like a fri-sat-sun-mon thing... if anyone might be interested let me know.

Not that Dennys on 106 is a problem but there is an IHOP in Am Fork. Just off the Lehi main street exit and go east to state and right onto state. It's just there by the new WalMart and Home Depot.

It's just close to AF canyon thats all.

I need to work on the 26th, but if we could start somewhat early and be finished up by 2-3 in the afternoon, I could make it.

Sure, no problem. I have a very poor memory, so we may have to relearn some things as we go, but we should be able to get it installed in a couple of hours (as long as you have an open diff...I'm afraid of doing an install in an LSD).

How about the Labor Day Campout? I won't be able to go, but it would be nice to have some KJ representation there. It's Sept. 3-5, I believe.

Sure, IHOP would be great. It doesn't have a cheap-o breakfast like Denny's, but I don't mind splurging if you don't. :)

OK, so here's the deal:
I am going to have breakfast at IHOP in AF at 8 am on Saturday, August 27, and then I'm going to to go playing up AF Canyon. I hope a bunch of you can join me, but, if not, I'll have fun anyway. :D

If we don't have a good turnout on this first attempt, then we can try again until we get it right. Sound good?

(But I'm only handing out LOST Rockies decals at this first one! :P

I think I am going to sleep in tomorrow, so I will miss the breakfast, but I will meet ya up in the canyon. Give me a place and time and we'll meet up. Say around 12-1pm.

*EDIT* Oh wait, sorry I am an idiot, next weekend!

Discard my above message. I will see you guys then.

Well, FWIW, I plan to be at Tibble Fork Reservoir some time between 1 and 2 pm tomorrow....in case anyone's interested...

I'll be carrying my two-way radios, channel 1-1. I may have my CB on, too, channel 1.

Unless something comes up, I'll be there at 1:30 pm. Will head up to Forest Lake first (takes about 2-3 hours for the round-trip, I think), then I'll see how far I can go up the trail to Mineral Basin. Call it a scouting trip for the next weekend. :)

The trail to Mineral Basin would be a definite no-go (unless we winched you across the rock garden ;)), but I think the trail to Forest Lake might be doable, if we take it slow.

If nothing else, we could go exploring for an hour or two...check out some of the dirt roads in the area.

...and we can talk about fixing that "stock" situation. (You know Jeep stands for "Just Empty Every Pocket", don't you? Get with the program! ;) )

Congratulations...and my sympathies. ;) Good luck with that. 8)

The weather should still be nice in September...and colors might be starting to change, no? There's no such thing as too many trips up AF Canyon, as far as I'm concerned.

So, Krazz1e and his wife* and I scouted out the trail to Forest Lake and had a great time.

The few pics I took before my camera batteries died are here:
http://youngs.homedns.org:8082/photos/l ... 2DAFCanyon

I think we all agreed that a stock KJ COULD make it with patience, skilled driving, and good spotting. So if any stockers would like to attempt it next week, we'd be happy to help you through, but we won't encourage you to do anything that you don't feel comfortable with.

One possibility would be to drive with us to the trail head (which is a pretty fun little drive in and of itself), then leave your stocker behind and hitch a ride with a lifted KJ. The more the merrier. :D

(Thanks to Krazz1e and the missus for letting me drag you around the mountain today.)

*Please note that I have forgotten Justin's wife's name, not because I don't care, but because I'm a blithering idiot with a brain deficiency that prevents me from retaining more that 5 names at a time. My most sincere apologies.)

NO the camera is not at a tilt!

The trail had 2 spots that took a little carefully maneuvering. I agree, a stock vehicle can pass through it will careful spotting on those spots.

I hope some of you guys can make it!

Is Forest Lake the trail that turns right, right after Tibble Fork Res? If so, I did that in my stock, prelowered '02 without to much trouble. I did have Manik Nerf bars that got a couple of dents in them because they hung down lower than the pinch weld. They've since been replace with Boulder Bars.

Yeah I think so, you follow a dirt trail for a while then cross a stream. Apparently the winter was hard on this trail and mineral point and there are some new challanges, so it probably is not the same trail.

So, does that mean your coming?
