Front Drive shaft - Recommend a shop in the Springs

Hey guys,

I'm looking for some advice. I was told by the dealership I need the front drive shaft replaced due to a cracked boot. They quoted me about $800 + tax, which seems steep. Do you have any recommendations on another shop that I could get a quote from? I'm hoping there is a reputable place nearby. I live near Woodmen and Rangeview if that helps.

order one from tom woods and put it in yourself. less than $400

Get a quote for a shaft. Installing the shaft is easy and if you don't want to do it, I'm sure on of the guys down there would help. If not, all you have to do is take a short trip up to denver and I'll help you out

Haha. Me install? Yeah right. I can't even figure out how to mount my bike rack in drywall without a stud and that is supposed to be "simple." DIY isn't really my thing, especially with cars.

There are a few of us in the springs... the driveshaft is super easy, don't cut yourself short...
The axleshafts (go to the wheels) are a little more labor intensive, but still easy.

If you buy a shaft, let me know and I will help you out. I would offer you my old one, but I just checked, and the boot on it is ripped too

Thanks for the offer. However, I really don't want to take advantage of your time. I did however, find a shop that quoted me a much better price. Not as cheap as DIY, but much more affordable than the dealership.

If you're going to take it to a shop anyway, might as well take it to where Troy works, at least you're keeping it in the family.

So, I thought it would be funny to tell you that I still have not fixed the driveshaft. I took it into the shop on Tuesday and I got a call around 9a saying it was going to cost 6 hours of labor, so I refused service. I even told the lady that called that she could have a technician take a look since I was positive we weren't talking about the same part. She said it would be ready to pick up anytime.

I got to the shop about 3p and the KJ hadn't been moved from where I parked it early in the day. I asked the man that was working if it had been checked out and he looked at the paperwork and said yes and it was the rack and pinon that need to be replaced. I didn't check the paperwork until I got home, but once I did I saw the work order said customer requested rack and pinon replacement...... :banghead:

I don't know. Maybe I'm not being specific enough with my language. Maybe there is a secret autoshop word for driveshaft. So today I took pictures.

On the upside, a buddy I work with knows a guy who will replace the part.

Hey look, that seal is broken. Check out all the debris stuck to it.

Hey look a part #, wow.

Anyways, thanks for letting me vent. This has been frustrating. People really do treat women like they know nothing about cars.

I've been to Moab twice - Troy was there both times - whenever there was a problem - he was the main man fixing it - Rack & pinion in a gravel parking lot - A arm's on the trail
He knows what he's doing.
(and he's got most of the shop in the back of his truck - Neatly Organized!)

That was my experience at the firestone where he works. However, I will note that I did not deal with him directly in any way. I did ask to have a tech check out the car to make sure they were replacing the right part. That seems like a simple request. But, sadly, my request was denied. :furious:

Oh well. It is what it is. If this deal falls apart, then perhaps I can try again.

It's hard to exactly tell from your pic but your KJ is black right? Did you bring it wed the the 7th? If so I got the ticket,was for a R&P install but they had the labor wrong and I wouldn't touch it till the correct labor was put on the ticket.Next thing I knew it was gone and the ticket voided.I was not the original person who looked at it.You brought it in on a tuesday or a thursday didn't you? I know we had that R&P and both front CV's for a KJ but I was not the person that looked at it.

Call back and ask for Dallas,Jim,or Daryl and and ask for a price for your front driveshaft,make sure you say it is a '04 with the 42RLE trans,and most importantly tell them that Troy say's it's the front driveshaft and not the R&P or front CV's.You can have them ask me if you want so I can make sure they get the correct part.

If you don't mind me asking,could you look at the ticket from the visit you originally brought it in to have looked at(you should have the main copy) and tell me the tech's #,it will be a 2 digit #.I'll know you to have a little talking to for missing the bad driveshaft.
