Glad you made it back. I miss that green chili although I still have some chili's in the freezer from last fall. I made some pork green chili last weekend.(still not as good as down there)

Yeah, it’s hard to get enough of that green chili. As a matter of fact, I had green chili today smothered all over my chicken enchiladas. :SOMBRERO:

We took the KJ out on some trails today. It rained a little on the mountain, so the weather was nice and cool. We saw turkey and mule deer. This is the first time I‘ve actually pushed the KJ. I was surprised by how well the KJ handled and maneuvered. I’m trying to find a few good trails for when you come out. There are some great trails, but the overgrowth is starting to consume some of the trails. Nice Jeep trails have turned into ATV trails. We'll take the camera with us next time and post a few pictures.

The move from Montana to New Mexico depleted our funds, so the XJ is still waiting for a few more parts before she's ready to hit the trails. I’m hoping the XJ will be ready by October.

On a side note, I fired up both chainsaws today. I haven’t used them in 4 years so I was happy to get them running again. Cutting firewood and lumber is something I really enjoy doing. Also, I’m preparing to start my honeybee operation again. I’ve been getting all my hives ready for next year. I’m hoping to have 10 hives. 4 years ago, my hives were producing approximately 70 lbs of honey per summer. From those 70 lbs, we harvest about 40 lbs. So 40 lbs x 10 hives = 400 lbs of honey.

So yeah, it feels good to be back.

It's rural, but it's very peaceful and rejuvenating. :CAMPING:
We’ll have to plan a trip when you can come out.

We're either going back up to Montana or Alaska. My son scored a 28 on his ACT, so that opens up some out of state scholarship monies. Glad you got back down OK. I miss some good green chili. The best I ever had was in Gallup at a little mexican food place called Pedro's. That was 15 years ago. Don't know if they are still around or not.

Why Montana or Alaska?

I’m sure Gallup has changed a lot since you were here. They now have a Home Depot, Sam’s Club, Casino, New Movie Theater, and several other higher-end stores, merchants, and restaurants. Gallup has really clean up the town with landscaping and new architecture. They also have a ropes course, rock climbing club, biking club, trail systems, Jeep club, etc.

Well, Alaska for the cash.....$125K, no state taxes, permanent fund, write rent off the top of federal return, completely paid medical plan, kind of a working vacation. Montana because we like it and my son likes Univ. of Montana, and it has a law school. He wants to do his BA and law at the same place for whatever reason. In Montana, you get the highness of the mountains without the elevation. The mountains at Bozeman are just has high looking as they are here in BV but with more O2.

There’s no doubt that Alaska will pay more. Montana cut education this year by 5% and looking to cut more next year. Several MT school districts have hiring freezes or have stopped raises. Alaska is still offering sign-on bonuses, housing, healthcare, etc. I thought about going to Alaska this year but my wife said she wanted to move back to NM and start a family. We have cheap housing here in NM and the income is pretty good. The only way your wife is going to make good money is if she works on a MT reservation, and if that‘s the case, you guys should move back to NM. :pepper:

CO is in bad shape too, and my wife or her teachers haven't gotten a raise in 3 years. The Rez is a possibility. Bozeman or Missula will pay 85K. I'd prefer AK but my wife wants to be closer to our son. If the North Slope offers her 125K, it will be hard to turn down. I suggested NM and since that is where she got her Masters, it would be simple to get re-certified, but she has no desire to go back down there unless we retire down there, and that isn't for another 10 years or so. I like the area down by Reserve.

We looked at CO, but not for long. The economy in CO is not looking good, especially in the area of education. Speaking of Reserve, I have a friend that lives in Mogollon. That’s a very nice area. We'll be building our retirement home in Timberlake. Unfortunately, the wife wants to build our home on a lot that we don't own. So I'll be saving money for another 5 acre parcel............. :banghead:

I was looking the other day, and saw some nice treed lots close to the Monument. Kind of flat except for the extinct volcanoes, but pinyons with some open area looked real nice. I was hunting down by Reserve once, and had stopped to eat lunch on a downed tree. A bear was slowly working his way up the hill towards me. He didn't know I was there until I waved my arms and yelled at him at a distance of 100'. He freaked and ran off. I thought I may have to draw down on him.

Nice Arch, I drove down and checked that out last fall. Did you go up on the sandstone bluff just north of there that over looks the lava flow?

No, we didn’t go up on the sandstone bluff. We wanted to see where the Zuni/Acoma Trail ended on the Eastside of the lava field. It’s a fairly strenuous one-way 7.5 mile hike through the lava field. We are wanting to hike it sometime this fall. We also discovered a Forest Road that goes around the lava field. We’ve had lots of rain, so the Forest Roads are a mess. If I didn’t have a winch, then I wouldn’t attempt to go down these roads alone. Lots of Bear and Elk in the El Malpais.

I hiked a couple of miles into the flow and turned around. I was alone so i didn't want to go to far. I saw That road on the map, it looks like a good one.

Yea, you definitely don’t want to get lost in those lava flows. :ALONE: When we first moved out there in 2003, there was a father and daughter who got lost and were never found. Some of those lava tubes go for miles. 40 foot ceilings, ice floors, complete darkness………….it’s truly the badlands.

I was kind of surprised that our Magellan RoadMate showed most of the Forest and BIA roads.

I was taking the back way from Gallup to Crownpoint once, and got off on an unmarked cow path type road. It started raining and soon, I found myself slid off into the ditch. I got out of it and back on the road but soon was right back in the ditch. I was able to make forward progress in the ditch, so I just stayed down there until I got out of that mess. Those roads are slicker than snot when wet.

Yes they are. The dirt turns into clay when wet. That clay clogs up the tread and balls up until the wheels can’t turn in the wheel well. I was driving down a trail the other day in 4 wheel drive, and couldn’t keep the Jeep straight for anything. This is where lockers would come in handy. :JEEPIN: That's the excuse I gave my wife anyway. :pepper:

The key is to marry someone who’s Jeep compatible. :JEEPIN:

Oh, you’ll love the weather when you come out. We are hitting the upper 30’s for the night lows. We usually get our first frost around the second - third week of September. Day time highs are still in the upper 70's to lower 80's.
