So when the trails getting made?

Well, you bring up a good question. We’ve been out mapping most of the old logging roads and other forestry trails. I can get my Jeep down some trails and other trails have gotten overgrown. There’s a lot of really good wheeling here. I’m planning to ask the forestry division for permission to trim branches. I’ll try to get some pics the next time we go wheeling. Right now the monsoon season is here so we have to be careful where we go.

Our goal was to trim and cut all the trees that needed to be cut on 5 acres by the end of August. We still have 5 acres to go, but at least we reached our goal. Now we’re in the process of hauling all the branches to the community burn pile.

We had rain off and on this afternoon due to the monsoons. We enjoyed the temps in the 60's.

A lady in our subdivision snapped this photo. Her female dog was outside barking up a storm and treed this male mountain lion.

Here’s an updated pic of our log home plan. Although not finalized, it does show the walkout basement.

We finally made a decision on a log home company. In the beginning, this was a difficult and time consuming process. In the end, the decision was clear and rather easy to make.

www.lazarusloghomes.com

There are many reasons why we choose Lazarus Log Homes. I will highlight some of my interesting findings.

The US department of energy proved that thermal mass homes out-performed R value homes in all seasons.

Many log home manufactures use pine. Depending on where pine is harvested, it often times grows too fast which means that the wood is soft and has more open growth rings, which consequently causes more shrinkage and settling. Lazarus uses fire killed, high elevation, low rain, short season, trees. This means that the trees have tight growth rings from an older shorter tree with 8%-10% moisture in the log. Many log home companies kiln dry their logs, which causes movement when the logs continue to dry. I‘ve been in several logs homes and seen how much they have twisted, moved, and cracked a year or two after they were built. With kiln drying, you get about 15%-16% moisture content. Double kiln drying can get moisture down to 13-15%. Lazarus logs are very stable at 8%-10%.

Lazarus has built over 300 log homes. According to the owner and President of the company, they have had no issues with their homes. I did find out that they have a BBB A+ rating with no documented complaints.

Lazarus uses their own unique system to seal up around the bucks, floors and roof. An independent party did a test that looked at thermal and air infiltration under negative pressure. They tested a 8” log home package in Michigan. The independent company said that the log home out performed nearly all of the framed homes tested. Living here in the mountains, I can testify how sealing up the logs around windows, doors, floors and roof greatly affects the performance of the log walls. Good windows and doors don’t mean anything without a good seal.

Anyway, I say all of this because a few of you have expressed some desire to build a log home. I’m passing the info forward in hopes it helps you make a better decision.

In this economy, I’m having a hard enough time trying to squeeze a construction loan from a bank. Six years ago if you walked into a bank and said, “I need a construction loan", the banker would say, “No problem, how much do you need?” Let me tell ya, those days are over. :banghead:

I found that very few banks are doing construction loans, which really narrowed my possibilities. The bank who said they would work with me is requiring a lot on my part just to make it happen. Image

I shouldn’t be complaining. I’m happy to have a good job and the opportunity to build a home.

There are a lot of beautiful places in the United States. We chose this area because we love the climate, the high desert feel, cooler temps of the higher elevation, and the mountains. It's the best of both worlds.

And yes, it’s a great place to live.

Are there any squaches out there? I looks like a very squachy area.

Can't help myself watching "finding bigfoot".

HA HA, that's hilarious…. :ROTFL: Yes, we are very squachy out here. The Navajo and Zuni most definitely believe in Big Foot. Once you see us on a map, you'll realize how remote we really are.

The garage and guest home have been finalized. The logs are 10” and the doors are 9’X8’ and 18’X8’. Sarah is still working to finalize the upstairs floorplan.

Here's the main floor. Other than windows, this plan is fairly finalized.
