My wife and I would like to go *if* I don't have to work. I should be able to give you a firm answer on Friday afternoon. Any particular trail you are thinking of?

I'm open to possibilites... was thinking about Wheeler Lake, Bill Moore Lake, Red Cone Pass, or Holy Cross (although that trail might be better in Aug or Sept). Other suggestions?

Winegirl, you aren’t messing around. Those trails are somewhat difficult. I’m a little apprehensive having just two vehicles and no winches or lockers. I guess I’d be more inclined to join the other group Kevh mentioned for the sake of safety and ease of recovery.

Thoughts?

my input on those trails...

wheeler...great trail. can make it but be prepared to bang around on bowling ball hill. luckily the 3 real obstacles have multiple lines.

bill moore...go for it. nice trail, you wont have any problems unless you approach from the red elephant side (there is a coulpe tricky spots but you would be able to make them...more un-nerving than anything). as for the normal route (through empire) we even had a stcok libby (rental) follow us up it one time. may want to avoid the chutes on the way up though

i dont know red cone

holy cross...wouldnt suggest it without being locked and having a winch. i would expect cleveland rock to be a major obstacle with anything under a 33" tire.

kevh, I generally agree with your assessments of the roads. And yes, now that I think about it, Holy Cross is better suited to vehicles with lockers and winches and 33s (I haven't been up there in quite awhile). I was just looking for beautiful, high elevation roads to get away from the heat. Bill Moore Lake (up from Empire) or Red Cone Pass were going to be my picks, although Red Cone pass gets much higher (12,800 ft at the pass). Wheeler Lake trail is one of my favorite roads, and as you pointed out there are multiple lines to bypass some of the toughest stuff, but I was hoping for more vehicles (3-4) to do that trail. Red Cone pass is generally a pretty easy trail, with the exception of one very steep, very loose downhill spot off the pass. Otherwise, I think a stock Libby could probably do it. Skyjump, it's no problem if you'd like to join up with the msv/coney creek group. I'm sure other runs will come up soon...like next weekend!

Oh, here's a fun site with pretty good trail reviews and lots of pics: http://www.traildamage.com/index.php
