Can anyone help me by telling me what trails I can do with a stock crd in the Durango, Silverton, Ouray areas. My KJ has full skids, but that is it. It is a daily driver, so I don't want to mess it up, but I would like to get the family out and enjoy the area. I will also have my 3 & 5 year olds with me, so I don't want to get stuck or put them in danger (the wife would not be impressed). I plan to lift it once the tires are worn out, but that will be a while.

There is a book out there called, IIRC, "Colorado Back Roads and 4WD trails, Vol. 1" that would be a perfect purchase for you. These books have extensive write-ups and are just about a must for someone just breaking into wheeling in Colorado. Unfortunately, I don't have any 1st hand knowledge of that area. We do have a couple of people heading down that direction for July 4th weekend to pre-run some trails for next year's 1st Annual LOST Rockies Silverton Run, so you might be able to hook up with them.

www.traildamage.com is a great site with excellent trail reports with pictures, ratings, etc. Just go to "Trails", then look for the Colorado trails with the county name where you want to wheel.

Ouray County trails that look reasonable for your stock CRD:
Corkscrew Gulch
Engineer Pass
Governer Basin
Yankee Boy Basin

San Miguel County:
Black Bear Pass
Imogene Pass
Ophir Pass

San Juan County:
California Gulch

They all seem to be more scenic trails than anything out there. Those are all I could find on trail damage, and since I am not from or wheeled around there, maybe you will find more trails not on that site.

thanks for the responses. I will try to check out the book and web sites. I am more interested in getting way up in the mountains then doing any hardcore wheeling. This area is one of the most beautiful pieces of ground anywhere in the country. I just want to enjoy it.

If there is anyone from around here that can give me a little more insight I would appreciate it.

I just returned last night from Ouray and did Ophr and Engineer in my stock Liberty with factory skids. Both are great passes and you should have no problems. I highly recommend both! Engineer is a little tougher but well worth the trip.

I also went to the Crystal Mill near Marble. It is rocky and a slow go but still do-able as long as you have skid plates.

All the passes in the area with the exception of Imogene and Schofield are now open!
