Per Joe and Dave's advice, I finally got my armor done. I put the Mopar gas skid on yesterday (my pain).

My rock rail building project is progressing nicely. One is completely done, the other is just getting started. That's a pain too. Leave it to jeep to make sure the frames is neither straight nor symettrical. The front half of the fram is about 4" narrower than the rear and both sides are curved differently. Means I have to pretty much measure every single peice with the rail held in place by jack stands. They will be strong though. the main rail is 2" square tubing with 1/2" side wall. The braces that hold it to the frame are 1"x2" tubing with 1/8" sidewall. Plus there is a 1"x.5" solid stock bar running along and bolted into the pinch weld.

I'm not sure how to finish them though. I was going to use spray on bedliner from duplicor, but the results I've gotten in the past aren't so great. I several coats on my roof rack and it made a really thick finish, but it seems to scratch off rather easily. I'm not sure it's a good idea to use on the rock rails. Does anyone know any really strong spray on liner or other type of paint? I really don;t want to drop the money to get them powder coated.

If you had not wrote the last line about not wanting to drop the cash to get them powder coated that was what I was going to suggest. I may be wrong but isn't there some type of spray and bake stuff that you can get done or is that powder coating.

There might be something else, but that is how poweder coating works.

The powder is magnetized then sprayed onto the metal. It's not adhesive like a spray paint. It is then cooked which liquifies the coating and it dries really hard and really thin.

I'm not a huge fan of it for something like rock rails. They will get scratched, the powder coating will get damaged, and rust will set in.

With a spray-on bedliner, it's cheap and easy to touch up. I'm just trying to find something stronger than duplicolor.

I might check out herculiner, or Vortex. I can;t seem to find a Line-X place anywhere near me.

Rustolium Spray Paint works well. I put 3 or 4 coats of primer and then 4 or 5 coats of red paint on my engine skid and it held up really well at Uwharri. That stuff is easy to touch up as well. Hurculiner is expensive... keep that in mind.

Dont bother powder coating. My boulder bars came with an awesome coat of powder coat and I've scrapped those down to the steel just about the length of them. No matter what you use, it will get scratched. I'd just go with good priming, couple coats of paint and touch up as needed (i.e. each 3rd Sunday of the month ) I just use rustoleum premium.
