I am new to the form. I am interested in doing a GDE hot tune. I just bought a stock 2006 jeep liberty sport crd with 90k miles dealer maintained. The tune recommends the upgraded torque converter. The specs for the transmission say it is a 5 speed transmission but I look at the shifter and I see positions 1,2,D and a overdrive switch. Is this a 5 speed transmission. Am I missing something? Is the shifter or transmission worng.
The transmission has the following on the drivers side.
TITTJ208521334 20:38:47
a barcode 462
P52119462AD RDE

then stamped on the transmission
2085 21334P52119462AD

Thanks

The transmission in the Jeep CRD Liberty is the 545RFE, it is a five speed automatic (technically a 6 speed) and is decribed in detail in this article:

As to tunes; any hot tune will required the upgrading of the torque converter along with the addition of the installation of a TransGo kit to increase the line pressure.
Stock TC's cannot handle the increased HP & torque and the internal clutches in the TC will chatter ("Shudder") in the two top overdrive gears when in lockup.

There are Do-It-Yourself tunes available on this forum for people who like to do things themselves and save money for other things!
You can read about it here:

And, welcome to the list; have any questions just ask, there are many knowledgeable people on this list more than willing to help with any problem or answer any question you might have!!!

When you push the button for OD-off, you get gears 1,2,3.
Turn OD back on again and you get 1,2,3,4,5.

The "6th" gear is called 2nd prime (2') and is rarely, if ever, used with the CRD.

There are three options for TC upgrade. The "Euro," the Hemi, and Suncoast.

Thanks, Flash, for your TC guidelines.

Whilst searching, I found out that when I used (2006 Ram 1500 4x4 w/ 5.7L) as a lookup, that options went up and price points went down.

And the list of transmissions that use the same torque converter: 645RFE, 545RFE, 45RFE, 65RFE, 66RFE

I've somewhat centered in on PATC torque converters which are not only lighter, but make forged converters for Moe's Racing
http://www.moes-performance.com/Edge_Racing_11_Billet_Hemiverter_p/hemiverter.htm, and through their own sales http://www.transmissioncenter.com/patc_torque_converters.htm#45RFE with custom stall speeds.
They also make custom billet converters with stall speeds 1500-3400, lockup clutches with 150% holding area and greater coefficient of friction, (comparable to suncoast?) for about $600 (about the price of the "Euro" Mopar TC).

If you're not into all that choosing and still want something in the middle, better than stock, Edge Racing http://www.edgeracingconverters.com/545 ... -p-42.html seemed a decent value to me.

Those are by no means all your choices. Sometimes "bargain brands" are better than expected. I tend to shy away unless I know at least a handful of people who have experienced good results though, and I have not yet gotten my CRD running, so can personally vouch for none.

Happy hunting

Unless you plan on drag racing, you want a lower stall speed for the CRD engine.
The factory hemi TC has a lower stall speed than the factory liberty TC.
I reccomend contacting florida torque converter.
