I was curious if people wouldn't mind posting pictures of there onboard air systems. Maybe a little info on placement and how they think it works. What systems there using...etc

I just throw the CO2 tank in to the rear and strap it down when I wheel now.

I've tried the Cheap $50-100 compressors for a while, none lasted more than 2 trips. For the cash of a Vlair, Warn, or ARB System it was cheaper to go with CO2.

See page two (I think) of my mods thread where I have my ARB installation pics to see my setup.

@daspes - I think I may eventually go with a tank as well...reliability of a compressor mounted under the hood is tenuous at best. I am not all that impressed with my Viair pressure switch either...Seems sticky as once it heats up under the hood it does not shut off on a run sometimes...and when it is cool/cold it will not turn on when pressure goes below 85psi...Maybe I just got a lemon of a Viair pressure switch...

I have went through various compressors over the years from cheap to more than I should of spent on one, and none lasted that long nor did they do all I wanted them to do.
Now with the CO2 its there, ready anytime, cheap to fill when needed and more than enough power to air up tires/ run tools etc.

I'm on #2 of this model and I have cannibalized #1 to fix #2 already.

It does, however, push out a lot of air when it works...as high a flow as some big name models pushing over $200.

Some comparisons with other compressors. (Called the MV-50 here) http://www.parksoffroad.com/prodreview/ ... ormain.htm

I have fabbed up a little air filter on the intake side that I oil with a little gear lube. I have found that this helps seal up the piston a little better like in an auto as the oil that everything is coated in when it is new quickly dries out.

how did you make the air filter?
i see this...
"There is a small air filter on the compressor intake and a dust shield on the filter made from the cap of a spray paint can. "
but details?

I used a valve cover breather like this and cut a hole in the top of a black spray can cap to slightly smaller than the chrome top on the small side of the filter. The chrome top of the filter just pops throught the hole in the spray can cap and stays put. If you looked at the assembled filter with cover from the top of the spray can cap, you would see the round chrome piece of the filter. As luck would have it, the inner round section of a spray can cap is almost identicle in size as the top chrome piece of the filter and provides the perfect guide to make the hole in the cap.

I found the breather filter in an auto parts store in the 'pimp your car with cheap crap' section that most stores seem to have these days.

I know everybody can't do this setup but it may give someone some ideas. My tank is 25# and can produce 3,000lbs. pressure. It cost me $4.00 to have it filled.

Although I agree in principal, some of the tanks I've seen advertised in the back pages of 4x4 mags are a complete rip off. They're prices are insane. I can fab my own tank as good as any PowerTank for a lot less money.

Yep you can build your own or shop around and wait. I got mine off of a guy on another forum, he needed money and got it for 85 shipped, hose and everything, he had it for 2 months, according to the sales slip in the box. Its a 15 lb from The Source.

I have been looking at parts, tanks, regulators. You can do it yourself with a good regulator for slightly more than 1/2 the cheapest commercial setup I have seen.

My question is...how long does a 10# tank last vs a 5# tank? How many tires (say 31"/245/75 R16) can be filled with a 10# tank? A 5# tank is much better space-wise. You can buy two 5#'ers for about $100 New.

Doubt it.The whole powertank is actually all in there special built regulator which will flow much better and at higher rates then any you will find. The regulator is 75% of the cost of the powertank system and well worth it.You can use any CO2 tank but it will be crap without the powertank regulator. You will be amazed by the difference,I know JJ was after he had a homebrew setup and then got a powertank.

oh and agree w/ Troy, PT is way better than the homebrew balloon factory fixed regulator/steel tank version I built for my XJ.
However, IT does work fine, just not as fast airing up but Way faster than Any compressor setup I have seen. The PT is probably twice or more faster than the homebrew And I know it would work better for air tools or bead seating.

JJ, How'd you fasten that to the rear door? looks great. I still got Wally's old one (mounted on your old tool box) and thinking of getting a new regulator to keep it from freezing up so fast. I really like the PT ones, plus I won a 30% off at FITS.

later,mike
