I was thinking about possibly taking my doors off for the summer...weighing the pros/cons...

-looks awesome, IMO, and definitely one of a kind
-helps with driving visibility esp. off-road
-the wrangler feel...now I just need a soft top
-100 lbs. of weight off the jeep
-leather seats will hold up to moisture

but...

-need to improvise some sort of driver's side mirror
-bad weather will soak my carpet and maybe the headliner
-don't have a locking glove box or center-console
-less weight will likely be reversed by increase in drag at highway speeds
-anything not bolted down can get stolen out of my KJ
-doors definitely don't go back on as easily as on any wrangler

Anything I didn't think of?

Freshmud...sorry to jump in so late! I think the tops of the doors need to make one clean line, I think the bottom of your co-pilot rocks!

In PA it is also illegal to not have doors, IF the vehicle originally came with doors. CJs could be purchased without doors so they are allowed.

I took my two front doors off today. 5 minutes with a helper for each door. took 10 minutes per door to get back on, Really easy. Only problem I had was the seat belts helicoptering. But really nice day thought Id give it a try, and it was EASY. Time to figure out a cool looking tube door or something.

awesome pic....seriously, if you have a higher res version, I wouldnt mind putting it on my screensaver. Its that good.

Its funny...i realize that he is probably protecting himself by grabbing the bumper, but if you squint just right, you can imagine him saying "No! It's too dangerous! You can't make it! You'll kill us all!" and the driver grumbling 'outtamyway...."

thats not even the worst of it.
i was sitting just to the left of the camera jockey and seth got the nose
waaaaaaaaay up there, we thought we was gonna go back down on the top.
awesome day that was.

This post has me thinking now... uh oh

I agree with JJ though... half doors are going to be the way to go on our rigs. They could be very nice if they were cut just right... I'll try and mess with a pic to see if someone can do a real photoshop on it.

I believe there are two theories on this.....both are better appreciated by ex- or current TJ, CJ, LJ, JK owners

1. No doors = No dents in doors when offroad
2. (Shorts + 60 MPH breeze) / (Hot summer day) = PURE BLISS!!!!!

Plus no doors really help with visibility off road.

Did you take any pictures? Or maybe a write-up on the extraction/installation process? BTW, I applaud your DIY spirit and energy.

I did it. I only did the front doors though.

My personal opinion is,
Pros:
-Offroad visibility
-Looks cool
-A taste of Wrangler, especially on beautiful summer days, nothing like it, even in the KJ! Sure its just the doors but still WAY different.
Cons:
-Wind can get annoying, but only bothered me on the highway. I have longer hair.
-Percipitation and cold is horrible, like anything else without doors.
-Theft and vandalism
-If you have the premium sound system, the amps are in the front doors, so no front doors=no sound. Then again, it was something else to just listen everywher I went, since I normal have the music pretty loud.

I'm too lazy to do a write-up, maybe one of you techies can take what I'm about to say and make it a write-up.

1. Find a helper, either another person or something to suspend the doors with in your garage.
2. Take out the door check-strap bolts.
3. Pull the electrical harness out of where it goes into the body.
4. Pull the harness even further back from the body to expose the two orange clip connectors.
5. Pop the clips, pull out the door end of the connectors, and you're done with the electrical. Might want to cover the connectors on the body end with something and put them back in the hole, but not too far so as to lose them in there.
6. Get your helper to hold the door up, or straps to keep it from falling.
7. Take off the bolts holding the door to the hinge.
8. Take the door off hinges.

To put the doors back on, do the exact reverse. To avoid problems with alignment, I hand tightened the hinge-to-door bolts and then tightened each with a wrench till they felt pretty snug, then I back them off a quarter turn. It worked. To be reasonable, give yourself 15 minutes to get the doors off and then another 15 to get them back on your first time.

OK here's my take on the whole thing. I think it would be cool to do this so it wasn't QUITE as dramatic as an open wrangler style door. If you cut the interior of the door along the path that the armrests and controls take on the door it would let you keep the factory door mechanism and the contour of the factory door. Here's an example of the cut line on a rear door:

Image

The window would be removed but the outer frame would stay intact to keep the contours. The perimeter around that hole would be lined with snaps and a snap-on canvas safari door with a clear plastic window (possibly a zip-down window)

Soft door skin like this? (but with a bigger window)
Image

From the exterior the cut would be approximately like this.... (I'm drawing with a touchpad so cut me some slack)

Image

This would let you still get some open air and would make it easy to hang out the closed door when off-roading. If you sit in your KJ and imagine the door missing at the armrest it's quit a difference.

Just some thoughts....

For me, I would want to fab up some tube half doors and then have them covered in skins like the wrangler soft doors. But that is more work than I think I want to do. But then again if I trash more doors on a certain norcal trail up here then maybe I'll have to.

everyone forgets that the liberty is uni-body...the doors are a big part in keeping the jeep true...if you do anything it should be half doors...and keep the out side of the door so you still make a shell to help the integrity...i have seen alot of xjs poop pot windows befor...yes i also know that the kj/kk are alot stronger uni-body also
