I spoke to him a couple of times and he seemed a pretty decent fellow who meant well. I suspect that he simply got himself into a bad situation and found he couldn't cope; "borrowed" the client money with the intention of putting it back when he got himself back together and found he couldn't and panicked and started coming up with desperate lies to try and cover himself when it started to fall apart - hence the "stolen" story.

I've seen it happen in other spheres of business - basically a person starts it off (from a hobby sometimes) and doesn't actually realize what it takes - in time/money/commitment to make a go of it. They often have a rosy picture in their minds of how long or how much it'll take to build something for instance. It starts to go sideways when reality intrudes and they borrow money from peter to pay paul in the hope (although they see it as a reasonable expectation) that the money will start to come in, and then they'll be able to balance it all off, and everything will work out fine. It doesn't and grief ensues, sometimes with criminal/civil court repercussions. It's a shame, but as was said above, close off and move on.

He was a POS criminal.
