I spent a lot of time on the project, mostly all by myself. Installed it, realized it would look way better if the exposed metal beneath it was painted to match or at least a darker color, removed it, masked off rear of KJ, painted it the same hammertone black, removed the masking, reinstalled the bumper, (i was right, looks Way better) cut the flares, pop rivited the flare back to the new "mud flap" and metal underneath, spent an hour fabbing up a mount for the license plate (still want to see what Marty came up with), installed the shackle doohicky, almost done.

I need to get the exhaust tip fixed so it stops rattling against the pass side mount.

The thing is pure beef, I like it. :D

Oh and the worst part of the whole job was getting to the 4 bolts that hold the front portion of the plastic bumper in place. I also didn't remove the flares but fitting my meat hooks inside the flare to get to those bolts was fun.

JJ, How about some close-ups of the flares? With the Reny flares, I am more concerned about how they look when I cut them (if I do a cruddy job and "chip" the paint).

Good tip Tokyojoe for not "chipping" the paint on your flares is to use masking tape on the flare where you want to cut(So basically you are drawing the cut line on the tape) and that will minimize or prevent chipping of the paint. Also take your time with the cutting tool, slower cuts means better control.Hope that helps!

Here are what the license plate mounts look like.

Image

The plate with the nut sandwiches between the tire carrier and the wheel. You will need to pop the center cap out so the other piece with the bolt will thread in. The light also comes with the mount, it grounds itself, and has one wire for the power. The bracket will work with the stock carrier, and then can be transferred over to my swing away carrier if that is added later on.

When the license brackets go out, you will also get the adhesive trim that goes on the cut edge of the flare, and those that ordered the shackles, those will be in the box as well.

My basic instructions with picture links were already posted, so if you have any further questions beyond that on the install before I make up some more detailed instructions, feel free to get ahold of me and I will explain anything in further detail.

Silly question on the plate holder.

When you're spinning the plate holder to screw into the nut, wouldn't the light wires get tangled up around the bolt?

Wonder if anyone's thought of that before, Don!! Wouldn't that be rotten to have to deal with when you have a flat.

I'd put a little spade connector quick disco in there when I wired it up, were it me.

Figured I'd have to do that anyway or there would be no way to get the tire off. Just wondering if I missed something. I could see the place that rotates my tires screwing something up if it isn't pretty simple.

Perhaps we should get an official "How to" writeup for Removing the rear bumper fascia/flares. Take Marty's RL Rear bumper info and pics and do a "How to" write-up on the install.
