I just ran out & checked, & It is a 242J. But I agree with you that there are going to be differences between cases with the same number, I am not arguing against that. Me & my KJ are currently in Cincinnati, so I can't check my WJ 242 part tag to see if it is a 242J, but I think it is, & it has a 27-spline output shaft.

Like I said before the argument I am making is that the 242 is not a weak t-case as compared to the 231, and just like any piece of mechanical equipment, the 231 can & does fail.
Oh I'm not saying the 231 won't fail but compared to the 242 that comes in a KJ the 231 that comes with KJ is much stronger.I've seen many 231's blown to bits.I've seen the BorgWarners that come in the SuperDuty's(that can handle like 7000lbs input torque) blown to bits. It's how you take care of it and what engine is in front of it.

It was "AdamIsAdam" that said there has been no failures of the part-time cases.

I'm sure there has been 242 failures in the KJ(there like 800,000+ KJ's out there with at least a 1/3 having the 242).I know for a fact of mulitiple 242AMG(the HD version) failures.I probally swapped out 2000(at least, just myself) 242's in Hummers between '96 and '00.I don't as much anymore since they started using the 218 t-case,I've only done about 10 218's since '03.
