i know a comment was made about an aluminum sraight axle not being feasible because of the weight. seems the zj (grand cherokee) came with an aluminum d44 rear. whoda thunk. wonder how strong it is :?:

I don't recall ever seeing an aluminum axle on a ZJ (doesn't mean it's not true though.) Can anyone else shed some light on this?

EDIT: Ahh, a quick Google search reveals that the D44 on ZJs had an aluminum housing. The tubes were still steel though. Interesting info. Thanks for the edu-macation kevh. :)

TheD35 is a complete piece of junk.

the only way the D35 would be stronger than the 8.25 would be if it had a "super" 35 kit in it. and then it is very marginal

the axles are tiny little 1.13" diameter (27 spline) axles. and a 7-9/16" ring gear

for comparison purposes, the 8.25 has a 8.25: ring gear and 29 spline axles.

the other problem is the tiny ring gear not very good for running anything larger than stock tires. and the housing flexes like mad..

Alright so my question is:

Do I keep the Corp. 8.25" for the rear and run 35's or get a D44 for the rear and run 35's. Im starting on my SFA kit and it will be a long time before I get this up and working. I want to see what else I need to do to be able to manage my money correctly. Thanks!

d44

bigger shafts, bigger ring gear and more options when it comes to lockers/gearing/shafts/etc

the loss of ground clearance is a major drawback and even on 35s and geared to the hilt, the d60 is mucho overkill for the v6

i would guess any and all abs is going to go bye bye anyway, but keep that in mind.

OK, knowing everything in the thread now...how does one distinguish whether they have the D35 or the 8.25"?

Hey Guys,

Quick Diff run down from a Diff guy:

The 8.25 is one hell of an axle for our rig (33" tires shouldn't be a problem) The only real difference bewteen it and a d44 is the bolt in/c-clip deal. C-clips aren't all that weaker, they're just not as safe. You break one, it's coming out. D44/bolt in's hold it in even if you break a shaft. That's the biggesat difference. The ring gear is basically the same size, and if memory serves, the carrier bearings are the same size.

A 35 sux. All the way around. The tubes are weak, the ring gear is too small and everything about it won't last after 31" tires. The "Super 35" Dana sells isn't the 30 spline upgrade...it's what they put in 6 cyl Cherokee's (bigger ring gear bolts and bearings, that's it)

The Super 44 (Aluminum) in a ZJ was a good idea, but it runs a D60 sized pinion and they are no real after market products made for it. They made it for Vipers and Vette's...threw it in the ZJ because of the V8. Avoid em...ask any Grand Guy what he thinks about it...

A D60 would be ideal for 35" tires and a V8... the 3.7 doesn't throw enough torque to break an axle in the 8.25, so you could keep it and get away with for awhile, but if you're going the distance (ie 35" tires and an SFA), a rear 60 or a GM 14T would be what I advise. Both are full floaters (they don't carry weight and slide out without jacking the car up) and are mui strong.

There you go...

Aloha and good luck.

Oh so someone else has heard of it!!!!!!

Seth, I talked to you on the phone concerning machining an ARB for Dana 35 tone ring....Thanks for the help.

Here is another question for you. The "super" would not really make a diff in the fit of a traction device would it? Would it really matter for a "lunchbox" locker?

Shouldn't...

Carrier is still the same size, and the spline count and pitch is the same...

Drop that Loc-Rite in there, man!

Auburn Gear solved my problem. I think the loc right would make as much noise as the no-slip.

This no-slip application is BAD news and dangerous. Only good for off road

Maybe yall (ARB) can make one manufactured for the tone ring one day
