A lunch box will replace the guts of your factory carrier, which is what limits it's strength. A drop in such as a Detroit Locker will replace the carrier too.

So basically, in my opinion, this thread is well worth watching. Especially come May, there might be something to look forward to. Moose, are you looking at the possibilities of buying this Locker for your KJ and become the test animal for us?

It will be for a 29-spline 8.25 so yes, it will. Thats why moose posted this here. :)

Im curious as why the other thread about the locker in the D30a was closed. There was alot of good info about the FRONT diff of the liberty in that thread.

TJKJ also pointed out that the aussie for the D30 will work for the D30a since it doesnt replace the pinion. Seems like that was a mis-understanding among a few.

I took your sig diesel.. :)

SO up until I saw this thread I was going with ARB's, but I am second guessing now. I really want good on-road manners, so I do not want a full time locker. What are these like on the road?

Going with these would make my next project happen much sooner since 1 Aussie is around 250 and 1 ARB is a hair under 700.

It's still a full automatic locker similar to the Power Trax and non selectable unlike the ARB.

My Powertrax engages whenever I'm accellerating, and disengages when I'm coasting. (I've heard much more complicated explanations for how it works, but that's the behavior I experience.) So, the only time it sort of misbehaves is when I'm accelerating and turning at the same time. I would imagine that the Aussie behaves about the same.

I've loved my Powertrax. Paid about $330 and installed it myself in 3 hours. Probably the best bang-for-the-buck mod I've made.

The Aussie has a great rep, though, so if I were making the choice today I'd probably get the Aussie.

The power-trax no-slip and the aussie locker operate under the same princple so road manners are likely to be very similar.

Guys I have said it once and I will keep saying it
You get what you pay for
yes I am "bitter" towards any "lunch box locker" but I have seen some work for years and I broke 2 on back to back trail rides but I have done some really good stuff with the Detroit and it works every time and best part it is predictable
that is no surprises which I had a lot of when both the power trax were working
now as far as fronts ARB or open that is what I think

If you simply can not weight and must have it NOW then get it but I recommend holding out and saving your money for the good stuff

I get so tried of hearing all the bashing on the lunch box lockers. For the average Joe out there that doesn't plan on owning his particular Liberty for the rest of his life, and doesn't have an unlimited budget in order to drop about $1,200.00 on an ARB installed, a low priced easy to install lunch box is his answer.

In 3 + yrs. running the Power Trax No-Slip, I have yet to hear any banging noises as a few have described or problems of any sort with it.
I really enjoy hill climbing, which as most of you know, puts the majority of stress on the rear end. There have been numerous times I've had to really put my foot in it, to get up various hills and obstacles by litterally bouncing my way up. Therefore, when the Power Trax finally does die, I would not be hesitant to relace it with an Aussie, for the price, and ease of instalation. In fact, I could replace it about 5 times compaired to the price of one ARB.
Image
The angle of this shot doesn't really show how steep this hill was, as it was taken from a high point from across the road on zoom level.
I did the center hill in this shot after fighting to get up up the first level through all it's humps, and if you look closely, you'll see all the ridges protruding that I had to get up and over, and this was in lo gear in 4lo with the peddle mostly to the metal. I was surprised the front housing didn't blow that day. Hoss 75 from PA. rode up with me that day, I gave him the camera to take pics on the way up, but needless to say, he was to busy holding on to the grab handles to take any. No one in the group of wranglers, (all sitting on 35's and locked) that I was wheeling with, even had the balls to try it. Just the rail buggy's a few quads, and one Jeep Liberty. The wraglers made excuses to go to Dairy Queen for icecream after that and left. Hoss also had to leave, so I stayed, and did it 3 more times that afternoon for the crowd that was forming, after hearing about a Liberty doing Scooby Doo over the CB on channel 4 that we use at Wellsville.

there should be a sticky on all the available lockers for the KJ like there is for bumpers etc. i think i would help a few make up their mind on witch to get. i wish i could afford an ARB but doesnt look like that will happen any time soon i guess im going to try a detroit in the rear and a TT up front.

There are some good posts in the Tech Articles forum, including this one that Clint put together a while back:

And don't forget my Links and Parts site (in my sig). Here's a link that will take you directly to the Lockers/Gears/Driveline category:

The other thread was locked because even though they dealt with complety different axles, and a part which is available now vs. one that isn't on the market yet, they were parts from the same vendor, as it was explained to me.

I will try to get this locker installed when they become available. (Oops: the rear one, not the front. ) I have had some concerns over a non-selectable locker with a relatively short wheel-base, a manual tranny, & icy roads. A previous experience in a YJ ( yeah, much shorter wheelbase ) led me to be cautious about the sometimes abrupt engagement/disengaement on icy pavement. But a $230 expirement & home installation is an acceptable risk vs. a $600 Detroit & labor for setting up the diff again.
