IF you where to do a soft top KJ, then an internal roll cage would be needed to strengthing the top of the vehicle. I personally think an internal roll cage is pretty cool. And if you do it right and put the tubing right up against the roof, and the sides then it shouldnt take up much room at all.

What about the added weight? Or if your KJ came with the side window air bags? The roof on the KJ is plenty strong to protect an occupant during a roll-over event.

The only time I could see the cage adding safety is if a huge oak tree fell on the top of the KJ or you fell off a cliff.

THere have been several pics posted over the years of rolled KJ's and most were at hwy speeds w/ multiple rolls which are way worse than what you would mostly see off road and they held up very well.
Interior cages have their place but if it appears that it isn't necessary for a vehicle, why add the weight and encroach on the interior space where your body needs that room when it is ragdolling around inside? There are plenty of instances of interior roll cages causing problems w/ occupants heads bouncing off of them where they wouldn't have hit anything otherwise. Many rock crawlers, even weekend warrior types, are now wearing at least bicycle helmets while wheeling for just that reason While Also strapped in w/ a multi point harness. I have read where a simple flop of a vehicle resulted in head injury due to contact w/ a piece of tube on a cage. So whos gonna be wearing helmets while wheeling?

I sat inside my KJ a while back and looked at where a cage would sit in relation to my head, etc. and I decided I didn't want to lose that head clearance. Can a cage be designed to tuck up nice and tight and afford protection w/ less risk? Sure, but unless you have mad talent & a bender or lots of money to pay someone else that does, good luck getting one because you probably aren't going to get that w/ a mass produced kit.

I only mention these things so people will look past the cool factor of a cage and think about the other things that should be addressed in relation to a cage and to the use of the vehicle.

btw, some wheeled Jeeps need the extra structure inside and it is more valuable than in a KJ. An XJ's roof isn't as strong as a KJ so I feel it is more needed but there is even less room for it inside. (then again, I have seen some nasty multiple rolls by XJ's and the roof never collapsed onto the driver and they walked away)

I just can't believe how well your avatar stands up to flopping on it's side once every 5-6 seconds or so. And that's with no roll cage at all.

A guy driving a 4Runner in a local competition flipped his rig once, on its lid. Crushed it pretty good. Luckily he had a helmet. He still walked away with 2 black eyes and a swollen head apparently. I think I'm gonna buy that interior roll cage after my SFA is done. I contacted the manufacturer for more info.

I plan on adding padding to any areas where my head will come into contact with a tube. I figure I'd rather hit my skull on a padded tube than have it crushed.

i flipped an 87 bronco II at about 50mph, it cut almost 90 degrees and landed directly on the drivers windshield support - a frame or whatever ya call it

it knocked it in really good, really good also rolled several more times and took an aerial impact about 5 feet up a telephone pole

the supports we have on the kj's and the roof are actually stronger than the bronco II's had

unless you simply want one, ya don't really need it, but if ya want one, it doesn't matter if it needs it or not go for it !

Just my professional experience: having an internal roll cage anywhere near the driver or occupants dramatically increases your odds of dying of a severe head injury in a rollover. Race cars require helmets and race harnesses, are you going to?

I have seen lots of mustangs and Japanese vehicles get in wrecks that should have been minor... BUT they had a cage that split an occupants head open.

Is that the kit? Looks like it would work well. I'd have to figure out a new place for my custom tool drawer, but that should be worth it.

I'm too lazy to look for it, but there was that TJ roll video a few weeks ago or so. In off topic maybe, but that is why everyone needs a roll cage. I'm not sure how well a KJs roof would stand up to a multiple roll on hard rocks.

I would not go cheap on a roll cage, as far as metal goes. Why have it if it will crush or bend when you need it most.

there is more to it than that. i e-mailed them about it and they said that they could make it so the bar would go through the dash (dash needing removed and modified) or above it... so that would mean that it would be a full cage instead of just the back like that one pictured above... unless of course they changed the design.
