Yeah you need to pull the head. You will want to go to a Home Depot or any other like store and get some of those wood wedges that are used to shim windows and doors, take one and cut lengthwise to is is not as wide to shove down and lock the chain against the tensioner so it does not fall off the gears when you take off the cam sprocket.make sure the engine is on TDC #1 and all the timing marks are in the correct location.Sorry I can't seem to post pics from the FSM PDF file I have that shows the correct timing locations. Also make sure that the cam does not turn after you remove the sprocket.
As far as what could have happened, well alot could have but the chain had nothing to do with it,it's either a valve issue or better start finding a new engine. If you have access to a borescope you could have a look without tearing the head off.

Thanks Troy, the little trick with the wedgie is the little things I was looking for. Have other stuff going on tomorrow, but will start pulling stuff off and try to get the head off on Monday after work. BugginKJ (a "real" mechanic like you) and Tommudd may even stop by and laugh ... errrr ... help me with it! :-)r

Tom and I discussed the boroscope too, but I would still end up pulling the head, so might as well just get-r-done.

What are you talking about? I was just going to bring a bigger hammer and sawsall, it seems to work for ya :jester: :ROTFL:

Have to see how bad it is first. Maybe 385HP V-6
THAT will be A LOT of work tho. Motor mounts, tranny mounts, either adapt the xfer case or get a new one, driveshafts, new front steel diff. .... A LOT of work!

I'm actually hoping I don't have to go that route..... altho it would be fun.

maybe I can fix the 3.7 cheaper. And that is the deciding factor at this point in time. :(

Started the teardown this afternoon with the help of BugginKJ. Got all the accesories pulled loose (AC, PS, Alt. , Fan Shroud and fan). Got the fuel rails off, Intake removed, valve covers off. Noticed a nick in the camlobe on cylinder 2. Don't think that caused my problem, but it's still A problem. Will pull harmonic balancer and timing chain cover tomorrow. Then I/we can mark/stabilize the camshaft and timing chain and pull the head off to check that #2 cylinder and try to figure out what exactly happened.

I didn't grab the camera until we had almost everything off

 Dont worry, I won't forget that YOU snapped 2 bolts trying to get it apart! :ROTFL: Yes folks, there was that one little snag. The rear lower bolt for the pass. side valve cover gave BugginKJ a hard time, so he showed it who's boss! Then it showed him who not to mess with! :-)r Also the bolt for the sepentine belt tensioner froze up and snapped while getting IT out.

J/K Hart, ... I'm sure it would have done the same thing no matter who was turning the wrench. It's just that it was you, so I'm going to enjoy myself with it for a while.! :ROTFL:
especially since YOU brought it up. ( I was gonna leave it alone ) :seuss:

Ahhhhhhhh thats ok, I can take it :SOMBRERO: Which reminds me, we are going to want to look at the rest of those valve cover bolts to make sure they don't do the same thing IF they are going to go back in

I "assumed" you two would not work tonight, so i never headed that way.

Larry I do have a pretty good size tarp if you need to use it.
