what!

is the airspeed velocity of a six foot whip antenna when it releases itself from the branch upon which it hung?

the KJ with the two-light bar just looks kinda goofy. I say go with a quartet of 7"ers on the roof if you're gonna get some:P

Is that an unladen whip antenna? Or one with a little smiling tennis ball on it?

I don't know, I'm not getting the two-light bar, but it's definitely got a unique factor going for it. Me? I was thinking more along these lines...

NOW THAT'S SOME LIGHT!!

If a radar gun could pick my antenna up I would find out...I have a six foot whip on my spare tire and yes it has the smiling tennis ball...The American Flag wore down (note to self lawn flags only last 3 months on the roof of a KJ)

I don't know if I can call that "bling." I think that set up would make more of a WHHOOOMPH! noise. Then the car in front of me would melt and I could continue on my way...if only I could see around all those darn lights. :D

Joe, you could put one of those pitch-timing baseballs on your antenna and let 'er fly. BbbbbOOOOIIIiiiinnnnngggggg.

Wait...do you really have the smiling tennis ball? That's AWESOME!

I want those baja-style lights. I've seen them for quads too which is pretty cool. If you drive out of the east at night, people may mistake you for sunrise though. :)

Well it's not exactly a tennis ball, but it's pretty close:

This is what a 6 CB whip looks like when it's mounted to the spare:

To get back on topic...

This weekend I built the prototype version 2.0 light bar. New Clamp design that clamps to the roof rack, and requires no drilling. Also the mounting tabs for each light step down, to position the 4 foot tube going across the jeep behind the lights more to make it more aerodynamic and less wind noise, and to still be able to drive it into a garage!

All wires will run in the main tube and enter the tube with rubber grommets at each hole. Bar will be painted with rust proof primer and covered with Rustolium high gloss black.

Price is only $75 + about $6-$10 shipping. (lights not included)
Pics will be up in a few days in the Fabrication section.

Sweet . . . I'm definitely interested! Can't wait to see some pics...

kkkustom:
I also want to have a pair of lights that face to the rear . . . because I do alot of boating and camping and the backup light would be awesome. Will your bar also mount to the rear? Or do you have any ideas about that?

I may be wrong but I think he actually wants to mount a bar on the rear section of the KJ, like over the high brake light, to face backwards. I'd like to do the same as I already have the Rennie light bar in the front. Since ure bar clamps to the rails this shouldn't be a problem, correct?

Yeah . . . that's what I was thinking. Though I did also think about what it would look like to have a row of 4 facing forward, and 2 rearward all on the same bar? Not sure which, if either, would look good? All on the same bar would seem to limit the light to the rear. But 2 bars spaced out might not look that great without a rack to fill in the middle . . . hmmm . . .

Any ideas?

Guess we'll wait to see how the bar looks with the "lower" mounts mentioned...

having a rear facing light or pair of lights up on the front bar would be worthless, as would a pair of front facing lights on a rear bar. You would have to aim them too high to be useful...

True . . . so the real question is how would 2 light bars look . . . one up front and one in the rear? Or would it look better to have a roof rack to have lights facing rearward . . . anyone know of any pics of this type of setup?

I can see your point now about having the 2 lights on the front bar facing the rear... the rear portion of the roof will cast a large shadow, so scratch that idea.

What would be nice would be a low profile bar on the back with the small rectangluar flood lights, 2 facing down to help plug in hitches and backing up on trailers and aimed higher to act as back up lights. you could use the bar I am making and just swing it around 180 and it would clamp on the back of the roof rack and lean towards the back of the jeep. and you could mount anything up there.

I welded on the light tabs, and filled doen the edges and primed the prototype last night, tonight it will be painted and installed on to take some pictures. I will also put it on the back to see what it will be like too.

Rear-facing lights aren't going to do much for viewing the hitch point unless you remove the spare tire. That thing casts a HUGE shadow when you point a light down from the racks. I've been test fitting with a flash-light looking for the ultimate place for rear lights. Mounted up on the racks is cool and can be pretty low profile if you're just looking for a couple rectangles. But then the flipper glass darkens your lighted area considerably when you lift it up. Useful for lighting up the boat you're backing toward, unless you're doing so with the glass up.

Having tinted glass in front of your lights might not bug you, doesn't bug me that much in the grand scheme of things...just pointing out what I noticed during my pre-purchase, pre-fab tests. I can still see the tailgate camping area okay and it actually diffuses a bit of the light when you're right up next to the truck, which is nice for the retinas in the middle of the night.

To get a good light on the hitch point: I'm seriously considering removing the rear bumper to see how I can mount a small light up inside there. Mount it between the spare and the hitch and cut a slot out of the rear bumper cover. Clean it up with the Dremel and maybe some edging and, BAM, light for your hitch. Wouldn't have to be a big light either.

And while I'm at it, I might as well get some krawling lights to mount up under the fender wells.

Dang thing's gonna look like a UFO before I'm done with it!!

Or, you could always just mount a light onto your spare tire mount (shrug).

dog_party makes a great point about the Glass, I hadn't thought of that. Though I can say I often back up to the boat / boat storage with that glass down. So when it's up you said the light does shine through, just dimmed from the tint?

I had thought about low profile / rectangular lights at the rear also, like kkkustom suggested . . . they wouldn't be as obvious and so might look really good since most wouldn't notice them. And intially it does sound like a slick idea to point a pair downwards for the hitch area because I had my hitch extended to be about 5 inches outside of the spare tire. But, dog_party made some great points.... Even still, I can't wait to see your bar and how it might work out facing rearward.

It might be easier to brainstorm with some more close up shots of the mounts and the bar since with it's newer design.

I really want to be able to illuminate:

1. The Boat while I'm cleaning it up near the launch
2. The outside of my Boat storage (inside has lights on) so it's easier to back in the boat
3. Anything else that might be behind my vehicle and require a nice dose of light . . .
4. Look pretty kewl and make people ask . . . why?

Another thing I really liked about your light pole was that it is low profile and shouldn't have problems getting into garages and stuff... My Lib is my daily driver.

Last night I painted and cleared the bar.. but it was still tacky at around 9:30 so i did not get a chance to mount it and take pics. tonight I WILL!!!

I came up with a crazy idea.. a swinging rear bar!!! picture this... the 4 foot bar goes across the back.. but each end has a 2 foot extension that swivels out from behind the bar to extend past the side of the jeep by 2 feet. or it can even swivel 300 degrees or so to extend over the back tire to see everything. you coudl move this thing all over... and when it is folded back into the closed position it would look like just 2 rear facing light in the middle of the bar! IF you can picture this rant in your head!! cool... if not i will come up with a demo set up or something!
