when i watched Superlift's Offorad Adventures episode about testing the 2007 Wranglers (was awesome, btw... jeep engineers really beat the crap out of them)... those also come with ESP... here's what the engineer had to say about it... not a direct quote but he explained it like this...

the ESP system consists of 3 different systems... ABS, Traction Control, and Stability Mgmt... while in 4-lo, ABS is "watered down", stability management is completely turned off, and traction control is still enabled... they guy went on to say that the traction control system is very capable offroad and is a lot like having a locker...

they not only showed 2007 Rubicons on the trail, but there were regular Wranglers out there with them... and you could clrearly see the traction control engaging by stopping wheelspin.

anyway, i've got the episode on my DVR computer... i may have to reencode it and post it up... it was quite cool seeing those guys tear the poop out of those new wranglers.

KEWL! Yes, post that up. You can use youtube.com for free. I just started using that for my amazing clips. You can upload up to 100MB per clip. That's about 5 minutes worth depending on compression used.

For Christ sakes. Put the darn thing in. Drive it around town without doing anything stupid, (flying around corners, full throttle burn outs or doghnuts on the asphalt). You will get used to the on-road characteristics and then go have fun off-road. You will love it. Period.

argh. Locker is NOT in yet nor will it be until I change my anti-freeze and my battery!

My needle was moving above normal in today's 100* weather. I'm overdue for a fluid change, so I picked up HOAT tonight and will try to do the job soon. I figure I'll replace both hoses too, and maybe the thermostat while I'm at it.

Then I noticed a lot of corrision over the neg battery terminal. A closer look revealed a slight crack in the battery's top where the terminal post comes out!

I guess it's time for a dry cell.

After those two projects, I'll tear the rear down. Boy, that thing is smaller than it looks in pictures. Heavy, but small. (7lbs - more reciprocating mass on the 4,780lb KJ!)

Ya gotta grow up sometime

I don't understand your email, so I'll let you explain it before I get annoyed by it.

But the tractech has no clutches...

Anyhow, I'll be anxiously following your feedback on road manners.

OK. I'll try and get it installed soon. I'm going away for the next few weekends, so I'll see when I have the time to install it.

Take out your handy 2006 owners manual.... and turn to pages 126-133, particularly 133:

"4WD LOW RANGE"

"This is the normal operating mode for ESP in 4WD low range... In 4WD low range, ESP and TCS, except for the "limited slip" feature described in the TCS section ( pg 127 traction control) are turned off until the vehicle reaches a speed of 30 mph. At 30 mph the normal ESP stability function returns but TCS remains off. When the vehicle speed drops below 25mph (again) the ESP system (stability control) shuts off."

The ESP botton does the same thing as putting it in 4-Lo, as per page 131, "partial off mode".

Now, on page 127 TCS is explained. The manual mentions it being two things: 1. Monitoring wheel slip and using brakes to help transfer power-- "limited slip". 2. Limiting the power output to the rear wheel by momentary throttle reduction.

Taking these two together-- The paragraph from 133 that I quoted above, and page 127-- you can figure out that the ESP button (or putting it in 4-LO) disables the TCS power reduction feature-- but leaves the braking to transfer power and reduce wheel spin feature.

I notice the power reduction feature when applying lots of throttle around curves, or especially when hitting a bump and getting some air while accelerating. The TCS light flashes at me and the power is quicky reduced for a split second. I suppose this is real handy on ice, but have not tested it yet.

As for the ESP, I tested it out by having my CRD in 2WD with one side stuck in the mud and the other on the pavement. If it worked, I would be able to get out as the side on the pavement would get traction. Well, it spun for a couple seconds-- digging a hole with the tire, and then slowly started turning the wheel on the pavement- so it does work. But it is kinda like a weak limited slip. The side in the mud was definately spinning still. Not doing anything productive, but slinging lots of mud. I would have to say that with a DTT-- it would rock.

As for the ERM/ESP correcting oversteer and understeer-- they work wonders, as I found out while out in the desert hot dogging and trying to slide it. When you get it into a position that involves extreme understeer, you feel the vehicle start to slide to the outside, and then the light comes on and you feel it put the brakes on one side and it snaps the vehicle right back to where the steering wheel was pointed. It is like a magnetic force kicks in and pulls you back to where you turned the wheels. Very impressive.

Disappointing, however, is the ABS. I could do without that at all in 4WD. The 4WD friendly ABS is still abs and it will still make your stopping distance longer on dirt roads/mud. When I first got it- I applied the brakes firmly, intending to lock them-- forgetting that I had ABS. I had intended for the wheels to lock and dig the KJ into the little mud hole I had splashed into at a high rate of speed. I had figured this would dig me in and scrub abunch of my speed, and then I would release the brake and use the remaining inertia to fling me out of the mud and around a corner. Well, the good old ABS comes on... click clickety click click and the vehicle just kept on going! No slowing, no digging in... stock tires just hydroplaned over the muck. At least there was nothing to hit off in the desert where I ended up.
