Why install a bumpstop if your tire doesn't hit the fender to begin with?
So you don't "bottom out" the front struts and damage them.

I didn't realize this was even possible... is there an easy way to check if this is something I need to worry about?

Everyone "should" extend or install longer bumpstops, general rule of thumb for every inch of lift , an inch of bumpstop.

Yes,and that is why OTT(Over The Top) lifts are not well liked on the forum.

The problem on the OTT is that by moving the entire strut down -

when the wheel cycles through the entire range of motion -
at the top - with the strut compressed the shaft of the strut will hit the bottom of the strut - i.e. it becomes the stop - since the internals are not that strong - it damages it.

by entending the bumpstop on either the fender or the upper A arm - you stop on the bumpstop instead of the strut internals.

This is not mentioned by any sellers of OTT lifts, so most people learn by killing suspension parts.

we have had at least 3 people run OTT lifts without problem - but they had to deal with either a bumpstop (or nonstandard strut) to deal with the problems.

Finally went out to install the extended bump stops today since it hit about 50 degrees. Went to jack it up and my floor jack wouldn't work! So I took it over my buddy's house to use his. With all the dried mud it took a little prying to pop out the old stops. Installing the new ones we used a pry bar stuck in the spring and under the new stop prying upwards and pounded the top inward with a small blunt pry bar and hammer. Hardest part was taking the tires off.

Thanks for the part numbers for the bump stops, and letting us all know about them. I installed mine today, and it was pretty easy. I used some rubbing alcohol on them and just muscled them in. I also bottomed out on them, and it was nice not to hear the spring bind, it marked the spot where the zerk fittings for the upper ball joints are. I used a 1/2" drill bit, drilled on the bottom lip a hole and then cut the bottom out for clearance.

Works great for me, Thanks again!
