 Post subject: Mopar skids and Reese universal hitch issues?

I've had a Reese small SUV universal hitch on the libby for a few months now with no problems. One of my b-day presents from my wife was a Mopar gas skid. I fiugred it would be a peice of cake. take the hitch off, then put the skid and hitch back on with the skid on top, right?

nope.

The univesal hitch uses bolts to hold it together to fit the vehicle it will be going on. One of the bolts just happened to hit EXACTLY where the skid had one of it's stengthening ribs.

Long story short, to get this put together, I had to weld the hitch assembly into one peice, remove all the bolts then hammer the crap out of it so that it fit over the skid. Then it all bolted up nice and pretty :D

Moral: buy a mopar hitch.

Couldnt you have cut some out of the skid? Or beat on it alittle? Glad you got it on though!! ALot of hitches besides mopar will work. I have the drawtite hitch with my skid and it works great. Curt, drawtite, mopar, hidden hitch, all of those should work.

If it was on a flat part of the skid, I would have just cut. The issue was that the bolt landed right on the support rib. I didn't want to cut that and risk letting the skid get compressed if it got whacked.

I have both a Reese universal hitch and a Mopar skid, and I had no problems. The only thing I can think of, is I ran the bolts that hold the hitch together so that the bolt was facing the skid, and the nut was facing out. This made the part facing the skid a little more flush. Anyways, it worked ok for me. If I can dig up some pics later, I'll post them.

I have a "Quality S" hitch, I think the model was 227. Fits perfectly with a tank skid. It's a "hidden" style tube hitch, so only the 2" receiver hole sticks out below the bumper. Looks great, and it was dirt cheap.

I never really liked the idea of "adjustable" or "universal" hitches. Seems like they wouldn't be as strong as a good one-piece.

I have the Reese direct fit hitch. It fit perfectly with the mopar skid.
