So when I'm tired of the squeaking rear and when my bushings have been squeezed to heck and back from all the constant re-tightening of my Rusty/OME rear shocks, I can just drop these in right, since they're supposed to be the right size for the KJ?

The Rancho's that came with my Frankenlift have the correct bushing and just dropped right in.

Here is the recommended shock for a stock KJ:


This is the 17004, which is spec'd for a 1998-2001 Dodge Durango (stock):


Here are the specs for the 17004 and 17080:


Notice that the range of travel is increased from 8.25" to 9.25", and the maximum extended length is increased by exactly 2.5". (Perfect!)

Also interesting is the upper mounting codes (LS28 vs. LS52). According to the following chart, there is a significant, but hopefully not problematic, difference between these two mounting codes:


I don't worry about the difference in sleeve mounting width (only 1/16"--negligible), and I assume that the shocks come with new bolts (12mm vs. 16mm), so there should be no problems at all.

In any case, they should fit MUCH better than my old ProComps.

So, Monroe's mid-level shocks (Sensatrac model #37140) have the exact same specs as the Rancho 17004 (as far as length and mounts are concerned), and they're available for $34/ea from RockAuto.com. Shipping to my zip code is only $9, for a total cost of under $80 for the pair.

Does anyone have any experience with Sensatracs? Would you expect Ranchos to be superior on the trail to these shocks?

(Monroe also makes some cheapies that cost about half as much as the Sensatracs, but I'm looking for a decent product.)

hey troy. i'd stay away from those sensatracs. they ar designed for a nice cushiony ride thanks to there valving. not really designed for wheeling. i've been selling them for over 6 years. ranchos are made by tenneco which make monroe's. spend the few extra bucks and a shock that was designed to do what you are going to use it for.

I can really help with this for dang sure. Rancho is one of my customers. I really cant go into a lot of details about that but... The Rancho is not the same shock as the Monroe. Yes that have the same corp headquarters...but still not the same shock. The Rancho is an outstanding shock with all kinds of different parts than a Monroe.

There is also a lot of true R&D and testing that go into the Rancho that do not go into the Monroe.

By the way...the main problem with many of the other shocks that folks are selling to fit a KJ is not the length of the top spcer but the dia of the hole in the spacer. This is the real problem. The bolt hole is a metric size and most all the shocks are US. So in the long run after a few miles ...the bolt even beats the hole even larger than it is already.
