Post subject:  Piecing together a lift...
Hey everyone, **newb question alert** :wink:

So, it's about time I pull the trigger on a lift and some tires here in the coming month or so. Just a couple of questions, as everyone in here has been awesome with helpin me out.

My dilemma is to go with the Rusty's coil lift, or piece together a lift with:

- OME HD coils (front) and Rancho struts (which model strut for a lifted front?)
and

- OME HD coils (rear) and Rancho 17004 rear shocks.

Which other parts would I need to piece together a complete lift? Would I need rear bump stops, and if so, which ones?

Just wondering which route to take to get the KJ lifted.

If you are going to go w/ OME coils, use their shocks & struts too. Overall I would say the OME are probably a little better than Rancho.

Shipping costs will likely eat you alive if you don't single source your parts. Something to think about when making your decision.

Check out all prices, yes it may be cheaper in some cases to "single source" your parts but in my case I got the front Rancho Struts and HD OME springs from All Js, best deal at the time, and rear Rancho shocks from Summit Racing, better price, free shipping (at least at that time) A little time spent on here and checking out different companies, speed/off road shops is worth it. If you go OME HDs and a clevis I think that you will be very happy with the results.
While some like the one stop shopping idea, a little research can save you some coin.

I'm just curious if there is a different part number for the front Rancho strut when installing on a lifted KJ. like the rear is the 17004, or do I just get the front strut that Rancho says is for the KJ.

Just the same strut that is listed for the Liberty.

The OME lift is one of the most popular lifts out there since the franken lift uses them. The coils are proven to hold weight well and not sag with time. OME shocks and struts cost alot more than the rancho ones, so thats up to you and how much you want to spend. If you turn the front coils just right when installing the lift, you can do a decent clevis lift and level the jeep out. You do not need extended rear bumpstops unless you get a bigger tire with and a rim with less back spacing. Some say you do, but I ran my ome lift without them for along time until I got bigger tires and I was fine offroad.

Cool, thanks Jeepjeepster! I'm probably going to go with the 245/75 tire setup right around the same time I do the lift.

If you keep the stock rims, you shouldnt need any rear bumpstops. If you get the rubicon rims or something with that BS, you may get some mild rubbing in the rear at flex.

Just be careful with the clevis lift. If you do to much the upper balljoint will hit the spring at full droop. Like I was saying, if you turn the coil just right, the upperballjoint will go between the coils when it droops. This will let you get alittle more lift. Those tires may rub kinda bad if you do not do a decent clevis lift. You will need to trim the pinch weld and beat it over. May also need to do alittle trimming on the front of the fender well. :wink:

Just FYI psinyd, If you go and put them size tires on with the stock rims you will have some rubbing, I had that set up and they rubbed off the sway bar at full lock, the bottom of the front bumper, and the pinch weld in the rear. It was minor trimming for the bumper, and i beat the pinch weld over, that fixed the rubbing there. But the rubbing on the sway bar, you will need a wheel spacer or rims with less back spacing to get rid of that. I went with a rim that has 4" BS as opposed to the stock rims having 5.5" BS. You don't have to get different rims you can just learn not to turn the wheel to full lock. you can look on my cardomain page and see what the 245/75s look on the stock rims prior to the lift and after the lift. Awesome, thanks kolesy! I'll definitely keep that in mind. I was thinking I was just going to be in for curving the foglight door inwards and pounding down the pinch weld. Hmm, I'm wondering if a 245/70 might help the rubbing issue with the stock rims.

245/70/16 tires will fit a stock libby. They would not rub at all. :wink: May look alittle small though.
