Can someone walk me through step by step what's involved in upgrading and what parts I would need? I'd most likely have a shop do the work, but I want to know what I'm talking about so I don't get ripped off.

Thanks!

Do I just need the ring and pinion for front and rear? Is that it in terms of parts? Or does something have to be modified in the transfer case/transmission as well? Sorry, I don't know anything about gear work...

You'll need the ring/pinion, misc spacers to set the back lash/pinion depth, crush washer for the pinion. While you've got it apart you might as well replace the carrier bearings while you're in there.

The rear of the Liberty is easy compared to the front. You'll find that installing the front is an all day affair that involves taking apart the entire front suspension.

I think there is also a rebuild kit that was recommended.

This website seems to have pretty good prices for new ring and pinion sets

ALso, remember that the 4.10s will only come out of a 4 cyl liberty or from the dealer. Aftermarket 4.10s DO NOT WORK.

Call Astro Automotive in Denver. They have a very good reputation on the CO4x4 board, and their install prices are some of the best I have seen. Here is a post from them in the Vendor Section on CO4x4. They will probably know all the answers to your questions: http://colorado4x4.org/vbb/showthread.php?t=67643

That's why we dropped a front diff from a 4 cylinder in mine. My mechanic sold it to me for around $550. This is by far the easiest way if you can find a low milage 4 cyl front end. By the time you get the gears, bearings, seals, etc, and pay for the labor to have it set up correctly, you'll have more than that in the front diff if you swap the gears. You should have a mechanic that really knows what they are doing for gear work. Incorrectly set up gears are terrible. You can usually expect to pay somewhere around $250-$350 per diff for a qualified mechanic to swap the gears.
