LOST JEEPS :: View topic - Select-Trac Full Time 4wd Noise

I've had my Liberty for 9 months and never tested the Full Time 4wd until recently. The manual says I can run in this mode on any surface.

While cruising at about 50mph in Full T 4wdime, if I step on the gas, I get a grumbling noise like a CV from the front end. Not too loud, but noticeable. Is this extra noise normal for the KJ in 4WD or do I need to add it to the list for the dealer to check out (and tell me that is normal until after the warranty expires and then it is several thousand $$$ to fix)

I crawled under the Jeep to poke around. The left side joint, next to the differential, moves around and clunks a lot more than the right side. I'm going to have the stealer check it out. I would expect both to be loose or both tight but not such a difference.

All 4x4 make more noise in full time. My other experience is with Chevy systems that were not full time. The only time they were in 4WD was on dirt, mud or snow and going slow. Various noises are hard to hear in these conditions.

I'm on my second "Libby" now. It's an '05 sport w/Selec-trac. My first was an '02 and was equipped w/ Selec-trac also. I haven't experienced any unusual or extra noises and I leave it enngaged all the time. Even after switching to 2WD for a while and then back again, it still doesn't seem to produce any of the anomalies that some of you speak of.
I have just over 19K miles on this one and had about the same on my '02 when I traded it for an '02 Wrangler, but still, no unusual or unwanted noise from either.
On another note, going to have the LBJ's replaced next week! :wink:

I have owned or do own a first generation Grand Cherokee, a second generation Grand Chekokee and a Liberty. All had the Select-Trac transmission. All make extra noise in full time 4wd. If there was an alignment problem or tire wear problem, it was more noticeable in full time than in rear wheel drive.

It's a jeep thing. You'll understand!

This my 4th Jeep (2 Cherokees, 2nd Liberty) vehicle with Select-trac and all 4 made additional noise while in 4 high. To me its nothing to worry about,

i like it! I think its just extra gear noise from torque being put on the front gears.

Add it to your list and have them check it out, then keep the statement with their remarks for future refference in case you have more problems with it.

This is my first 4X4 vehicle so I don`t have anything for compairison. I hope extra sounds are normal.....

Its the same in our jeeps, the only time you can use part time or 4low is on loose ground. Thats why alot of people like the select trac, it has the option to use it on blacktop.. Ps: Nice name, it just happens to be mine too.

I have a noise and a vibration but I figure if I keep beating on it and something is wrong it will break and it is still under warrantee so let it.

Ive noticed its much louder in my brothers cherokee for some reason. I guess its b/c the libby has alot more insulation under it....

The noise is a bit of a rumble when I step on the gas, usually over 50 MPH. I had an old VW Rabbit in college that had a steady thirst for CV joints. Mostly because I couldn't afford new ones and used CV I pulled out of the trash at a friend's shop. I could get a few more miles out of them when I swapped out worn parts and packed them with thick grease. Not supposed to do that but I did. The sound is just like the start of one of the CVs going bad, a sound I was well acquainted with. In Full Time 4WD, it tracks like it is on rails. 2WD, it drifts and darts a bit.

Same for me. 1 Cherokee, 1 Grand Cherokee, and 2 KJs and they all do the same.
