I really like the treatment on the ends. I might have added two more span between the upper and lower bars to attach a couple of recovery clevis hooks ( or add them to the two spans that are already there ). That would leave the hitch hole open for a portable winch. I think a nicely formed piece of aluminum ( could be polished and anodized ) to fill in the background to cover up the uniframe pieces...maybe even extend down and back under the bumper and up and over the bumper and dissappear under the grill.

I bet that is fairly light and will not put any undue stress on the front suspension and it definitely increases the approach angle gobs.

At first glance, i thought I was looking at an old school Jeep (front grill).

Well i can't afford anything right now, but if it were me i would like a little thicker tubing, and maybe extend a little further out. But that is def. one of the better bumpers i've seen for the KJ!!!

Thats what I was thinking, just a little somethin'-somethin' to hide the actual bumper on the KJ. That would look sweet with a pair or two of lights mounted on it... :wink:

Looking good! Got a pic of it taken from a low angle from the front, sorta ground level looking upward? What size tubing it it? Wall thickness?

fellas, keep in mind this is a prototype. I am definatly interested in your feed-back and will try to incorporate as many of your ideas as possable.

What size tubing it it? Wall thickness?
Mounts where the hitch would mount? Any other mounting points?

1-3/4" .120 wall tube

2" reciever hitch

clevis mounts (if jj will give me two :twisted: )

as i said, feel free to chime in, critisize (constructive) and throw your ideas at me.

I agree, i think something like what he did on the ends, to cover up the uni. would be nice.

I agree with whoever said that you should make something to cover up the unibody. Maybe just a simple square steel assembly that goes down and becomes a front suspension/engine skid?

From his origianl pics in another thread, he had posted a backing plate...steel. I don't think anyone is critisizing this effort at all...looks great! The .120 wall DOM is the same used in roll cages for cars over 2200 pounds ( 2" diameter ) but I think the 1.75" is more than satisfactory. I say keep it as light as possible. I like the gray color if it matches the sport cladding. On the trailready bumper from my 2002 the clevis mounts were two triangle shaped 1" thick steel with the hole cut thru to slide in a recovery clevis. One ,the same length on the long side as the spans between the upper and lower bars, welded on each span would be nice ( the point would be facing out of sourse).Basically they took a 5x5x1 inch piece of steel and cut it diagonally.

Haven't had a chance to check but would the mount points need to be different on the '02-'04s? Maybe a bit taller overall but other than that I think it would look just *spiffy* on the front of my '03 Sport 8)

That is a killer prototype!! Here's what I would like to see on the 03' version (hint hint).
- Wider. To the match the width of the flares.
- End treatment looks great. Maybe could go back further. To match the flares.
- Backing Plate (with cutouts for the stock fogs and turn signals can't forget about those...).
- Seperate clevis mounting point as Darby described.
- Pseudo skid pan underneath? (could have that fabbed myself too)


Otherwise....I gotta hand it to you. Looks awesome!!!

Looks really good. I am in the market for a front bumper, and right now I'm looking at yours or RL. Both look awesome, it may just come down to $$$.

Shame it isn't going to be as easy on the 02-04. The turn signals on the newer KJ makes this easy as the signals are in a great spot and part of the flare, not the bumper. It will be interesting to see what can be done about that. Anyone have an extra set of 05-06 flares and signals they don't need?
