Post subject:  Backspacing - How to Do It & What You Need
I'm not all that familiar with the concept of backspacing. I'm "lifting" my KJ about a little over an inch and would like to throw some 255/70/R16's on my stock rims but have heard of rubbing with the sway bar. Would a different backspacing correct this?

I don't know how to change the backspacing and whether or not I need to purchase anything... any information would be greatly appreciated.

I cant tell you what backspacing you will need for your application, but I can tell you what backspacing is. Backspacing is simply the distance from the back side of your rim where the tire is seated to the mounting surface of the rim. So if you have a rim with no tire on it, you would lay a straight edge across the back of the rim and measure to the surface where the rim meets the rotor mounting surface, or drum , whichever it may be. The only way to change backspacing would be to buy a different rim with different backspacing, use wheelspacers, or physically machine material off of the mounting surface of the rim. It is not likely that you would need to machine off any material, the only time i have seen that done is with a lowrider truck that had tires that barely fit in the wheel well.

I have a 1.5in lift and my 255/70/16's rubb. They are sitting in the building right now. :(

but you don't have them on stock rims... yours are backspaced less, correct?

5" BS, Ive been told that is the best BS to keep down rubbing. If I had the stock rims I was told it would rub the sway bar.

Mine don't rub but I retained my stock wheels. I've got the 1.5" spacer up front that on the CRD yields about 1.8" of actual lift. My CVs are approximatly level (ie. wheels at farthest point from vehicle engine bay/body/inner wheel well wall).
