 Post subject: Selec-trac VS Command-trac

I’ve looked all over the forum and can’t seem to find the straight answers, if there is one. The owner’s manual talks about both Selec-Trac and Command-Trac; what’s the difference? And how can I tell if I have a Trac-Lok rear axle?

If someone finds the thread that talk about this, post it I’m very intrested to know what people thing the difference is.

The only difference between selec-trac and command-trac is that selec-trac offers full time 4wd mode. Full time 4wd allows you to run 4wd no matter what the road conditions. The only difference between part time and full time 4wd is that in full time the center diff/transfercase is "open" which allows the front driveshaft and the rear driveshaft to turn at different speeds, and in part time the transfercase is locked and the driveshafts turn at the same speed.

Didnt see the trac-lock question....

I think there is supposed to be a green tag somewhere on the axle, or you could pull the diff cover off and have a look, maybe you need to change fluids anyhow? Or you could jack up the back end so that both rear tires are off the ground, then turn one tire, if the other tire turns the same direction you have Trac-Loc, if it turns the opposite direction you have an open diff, OR a trac-lok that is worn out.

There are many here that know more than me, its just that sometimes the answers arent real clear or get lost in a long thread that may not even have started out on the topic it ended up on. :lol: One thing I do to find stuff on here is use googles advanced search, and just search the lostkjs.com domain. I usually get better results than the search feature on the site.

I've only been around the command-trac models but haven't seen any selec-tracs. I'm guessing that w/ the selec-tracs you can switch to 4WD HI and LO like the command-tracs, except that 4WD will never be off?

You can turn 4wd off and just run in 2wd with the selec-trac transfer case, that is how I run most of the 99% of the time. The shift pattern goes like this: 2wd HI, 4wd HI part time, 4wd HI full time, Neutral, and then 4LO. So it just adds the full time option to the mix.

Jeez, I am really wishing I had selec-trac. I have the base sport with command-trac. Around here (Denver area- go broncos) we get a lot of slushy roads that are semi dry and would probably damage the part time system. At least I can pop it in and out of 4x4 with the lever from the comfort of my seat. In my old bronco I had to get out and manually lock the hubs. PITA.
Sounds like the selec-trac just adds one more convenience if you can pony up the extra $$.

Yea, select trac is really nice. I need to start using it in the rain but I always seem to forget about it. That results in me going the other way when I dont want to. :) :?

I didn't know this and I'm glad I know about this because that makes me want to find a KJ w/ Selec-Trac now!! I can see how this is a really nice feature for just about everyone...from the offroading to even on the rainy highway. I'll be keeping my eyes out...it's hard to find a used one w/ selec-trac but I've been looking and looking for a liberty for 2 weeks and we'll see if I can find the one!!!

This is not true about trac loc and the tire turning in the opposite direction stuff
the tires will have no affect on each other spinning with out a full locker like an ARB or OX locker
any other locker/LSD will let the tires turn opposite each other cause it is the drive shaft that governs their affect or make them work
if the rig is in park you will be able to spin either tire no matter what
the best way is to look for a tag I was tought that ever axel made had at least 1 metal tag wich would ID the ring and pinion as well as model
mine in the KJ reads 8.25 3.73 or some ting like that the one in my TJ reads 44 3.73 or something like that the TJ also has another tag with some number wich represents the fluid type used for trac lock
I would think that this would stand true for all jeeps made cause I think I was told it was true for every car made

Im pretty sure about the tire spinning thing, it been a long time though. If I remember correctly if you jack up the rear wheels, block the front wheels, put tranny in neutral and spin a wheel, if you have trac-lock they will both turn the same. In park they wouldnt turn at all of course, unless you have an open diff, in which case they will turn opposite directions. Was a ford rearend I learned this on, maybe its different?

You should definately try to get the Selec-Trac with the Trac-Lok in my opinion. Even with the ice storms we get here, and going skiing every weekend during the winter, I rarely use anything but 2wd and full time 4wd. If you aren't doing trails, it's all you'll ever need.

Your are right about the park I'm a dork
I have an ARB in the front of my TJ when I had it getting some work done they had it on the rack and were "playing" with the T-case linkage they had the engine idleing with it in 4lo so I decided to try to stop the wheels and I could stop a front ,locker off, but not the rear then when they shut it down they put it in neutral and I could spin the rears they would spin 1 forward 1 back if you spin the D/S they will both go forward or back with a trac loc and I think that if you try to hold one it would be very hard to do so with some one turning the D/S
like I said the input side or D/S side is what makes them work not the output or tire side this I know

I had a Ford Limited slip - you jack up the rear - both wheels off the ground and they turn the same direction.

Jack up both rear wheels, leave tranny in P and try to turn on wheel. If the Ebrake is off and you cannot turn the wheel, you have LS. If the other wheel turns the other way, you are open. :wink:
