Pls post your thoughts, experiences and findings here.

I would like to know in detail what rim size & offsets you used, how much rub, where exactly, guard cutting, the whole shooting match, gears ?

I drive a CRD which has the 3.73's in it stock, its fine with 245/75/16's are far as i'm concerned, but that's the limit. I wouldnt go 265/75/16's without doing a 4.10 R&P change.

Thanks heaps guys.
Stu

KJ: 2005 Renegade, Gas.
Tires: 265/75R16, Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo, LT (light truck) C, Costco, ~$150 ea
Wheels: 16" Stock Jeep Liberty Renegade
Lift: Frankenlift, claimed: 2.5", actual: 2.5", All J Products, ~$750

The larger tires will rub in three places in the front: the sway bar, the air dam/front of the wheel well, and the back of the wheel well. To stop the rubbing on the sway bar install some 1.25" wheel spacers (Spidertrax WHS-002). The stop the rubbing on the back of the wheel well, cut off the plastic pinch weld cover, hammer over the pinch weld, and then cover all of the bare metal with undercoating. To stop the rubbing on the front of the wheel well you'll need to devise some way to pull the front of the well forward into the front bumper. You'll also need to trim out some of the air dam where it rubs. This is all possible and still looks completely stock. You should only get slight rub when the wheels are turned to the extremes while going in reverse. As for the back tires, they fit fine, although they do stuff off road, not that it hurts anything other than flexing the flares. You'll probably also want to put the spacers on the rear wheels as well for symmetry (probably other reasons as well). The spacers are just the right size for my Renegade that the wheels don't project past the flares, so they don't throw road crap up on the car. I love these tires and they got me through the muck when MTRs were getting stuck ;)

Acceleration and top speed will take a hit. I need to regear to 4.10 because right now my top speed is 80mph down hill.

If you have an automatic, they will not hurt the acceleration quite as much as a manual.

You might also look at 235/85/16s...they are tall but have less chance of rubbing front suspension parts and rear body panels.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I've removed the front inner splash guard, removed the pinchweld completely and the sway bar isnt even on when i'm wheeling so I guess that should be good, Its more the rear i'm woried about. My guards that are attached to the rear door haven been popped off permanently down the bottom and I dremelled out the plastic from the upper section of the wheel arch so the 245's didnt rub, also bashed the crap out of the steel section to lip it up (much like guard rolling for 20" wheels on lowered sports cars :) !

I should take some pics & post, but the weird thing is, that ABOVE the pinch weld section on the front, it rubs bad there? and i've bashed it back a alittle ?

MY TJM front bar is right on the edge of rubbing with the tyres - i'd have to get them to chop a but off the wings to get it to pass.

I'll take some pics & post later tonight (my time!)

Why is that? I would think that it would be the opposite, since with an automatic, you are stuck with the shift points defined at the factory, whereas in a manual you can shift wherever you feel like it. The only difference I can see is that the manual has a lower gear ratio (3.51 instead of 3.73), but it is made up for in the normal 1-6 gears to give it an even higher overall ratio than the auto had.

I have 265/75's on mine and experience the same rubbing everyone talks about. As for the sway bar, I used a 3/8" spacer on the front and it seemd to solve that problem. I ground off the pinch weld and it also solved rubbing there. As for the front, I still have rubbing. I've tried to pull the front of the wheel well forward but haven't had anything hold succesfully yet.

Please PM all ideas and what worked for other people so I can do that as well! Thanks a lot

I believe I have heard other take a heat gun to the front of the wheel well. Melt that sucker and push it forward some.

To hold the front of the wheel well inserts into the bumper I used a tie wrap looped through a cable clamp that I bolted onto one of the original rivet holes:

For the front right side I also heated up the wheel well plastic with a blow torch and bent it forward around the washer bottle. With 265/75R16s the tire still rubs at the washer bottle, but not enough to bother doing anything about it.

The 235/85X16s are usually about $30 cheaper than the 245 so they would be a real value over 265s. Some of the 235s I've seen have the same sectional width on the wheel as the 245 also.

I removed my washer bottle, going to do an underbonnet conversion in front of the stock airbox.

I'm running MT/R's(265/75R16's) on 16x7 rim with 4.5" BS and I rub no where, not on the sway bar,not on the pinch weld(it's pounded down),and not on the upper a-arms.I lost alot of power and MPG with the 3.73 gears but gained alot back with the 4.10's.I love them, the bigger the better! The correct BS goes a long way to preventing rub.

But you probably stuff like crazy off road right? I don't rub that much, but really stuff the flares.

I'm on my third set of rear flares. Bump stops helped, but they still rub like mad. Mine got so bad w/ the Rubicon Arms, the flares wore through and gave my first set of tires a custom sipe job. Not good times! Longer bumpstops made it so they quit popping off, but I keep eating those cheap plastic rivets. Dunno if that is a Rengade problem or not...

I use 265-75-r 16 Toyo MT's...LOOOOOOVE them. Stock wheels w/ Spidertrax Spacers. No problems in the front to speak of with our Deluxe Bar on it.

I run the Pro Comp Rock Crawler style 51's in 16X8 with I believe 4.5" of backspacing.

does anyone else run the same combo ?

Simple fix, I removed the rear flares and kepted them off! The tires rub only slightly at the front of the rear wheelwell due to the axle being no longer centered but not enough to worry about. With the 4.5" BS the rear tires fit nicely into the rear wheel wells,I'll post some pics in a day or two(just had surgury on my left arm so I'm the one-arm wonder for awhile and need some rest time before playing again).

Here are some stuff pics with 265/75R16's.The first four pics are the rear full flex and only have rubbing at the front of the rear wheelwell, the rear is fully flexed with the #4 pic showing axle to bumpstop contact. The last 6 pics are the front clearances at full lock and full stuff, pics 5 and 6 the clearance between the tire and pinch weld(beaten down) is almost 3/4" , and you can see I'm along way from touching the swaybar a a-arms at full lock turns. Great, thanks very much - are your rims 4.5" of backspacing ?

Regards

I'm running the 8" but that shouldnt be too much of a problem.

I noticed your tyres are chewed out bad on the edges - Is that from the initial testing ect ? ie: the old saying "I think I need to cut out more?" I had that problem too for a few weeks, but a dremmel soon fixed that......

Yeah my tires outside edges got pretty chewed up until I removed the rear flares and switched to 4.5" BS instead of 3.75" BS rims.
