Post subject: | Bent skid plate question |
I bent my mopar transfer case skid on my last outing. Since then I've noticed a rattle when I hit bumps in the road that seems to come from underneath. I was thinking maybe the transfer case was contacting the skid plate and making the noise. But when I crawled underneath and looked I don't see how this could happen since the skid plate and the transfer case are both bolted to the crossmember. It seems they should both move together if there's an movement going on and therefore they wouldn't come into contact. There is about one half to three quarters of an inch of space between the skid plate and the transfer case. Anyone have any experience with this situation? |

Do you have a tranny skid? I have had my exhaust pipe rattle against my tranny skid a few times. I had to put spacers in to give it a bit more clearence. Also check for rocks and sand up on the skid plates. |

Also check for rocks and sand up on the skid plates. Ditto, except for the spacers. |

Just a side thought, I also heard a metal type rattle, but my plate was not bent, turned out it was two hitch ball rattling in the receiver. Put some etape around it and the sound stopped. |

See if your Super Skid is bent by putting a straight edge on it. If bent even 1/8" its possible that the header is rattling on the skid under certain condtions. I fixed it 1) Straightening the skid by running over it with my 3/4 ton Dodge and 2) widening the cutout where the header is. This allows it to get bent again (which it has) without causing the rattle. |

Turns out I damaged my rear harmonic stabilizer. Dang those rocks in the white tanks were bigger than I thought. Oh well, who needs money in the bank account anyway. |
