I believe there's an issue with a lot of Jeep 2nd gears. I'm not sure, you'd have to get someone with more information. My 2nd gear acts funny too, but when upshifting. I can't recall what it does when downshifting into 2nd. |

If you're only having problems with 1 gear it's not the clutch. It's probably synchronizer related. I have an S2000 and while it has an awesome gearbox, first gear is finicky when it's cold outside. So a lot of the S2000 guys have changed to a different trans fluid (GM syncromesh maybe, I can't remember) and it fixes the problem. So if it were me, I'd give a diffferent manual trans fluid a try. If that didn't work, I'd suspect it's a problem with your 2nd gear syncros. If you want to test your clutch drive about 50 miles per hour in 6th gear. Floor it. If you don't feel any slip, your clutch is probably fine. |

my 2nd gear is real harsh too...upshifting and downshifting, i kinda just changed my shifting habits though and i dont really realize it too much tho... i know alot of people with manual cars use 2nd gear to make a turn, but for the most part i use third gear unless im stopped and going into the turn, thus shifting into second at the end of the turn...let me know if you find anything that changes it... |

Like keep the peace said, I too find myself turning in 3rd gear as opposed to 2nd. I think this is because the 6 speed has a narrower band (obviously). I do find that second goes in a little harsher than all other gears, but it seems to be getting better with break in. I plan on going to the Amsoil synchromesh next summer..... Good luck, Steve |
