| Post subject: | leaky rear diff gasket |
so i changed my diff fluid saturday, and it looks like i've got a slow leak in the rear. i used a gasket rather than RTV. the rear was torqued to 30# and it was very clean (eddo hit it with a wire whee). should i add another 5# or so to the bolts? do I have to redo the whole thing? other? thanks for any ideas in advance |

Where did you get the gasket? I got some paper gaskets and noticed some of them has been folded in half.. I used ones that hadnt been. Did you check to make sure the gasket was in good shape all the way around? I dont even use a torque wrench.. I get get them snug.. Inst good practice.. But Ive not had any problems with it leaking. I would tighten them down more. Dont use all that strength though.. 
Edit: How many miles do you have on it already? Its not even a year old is it?

Edit: How many miles do you have on it already? Its not even a year old is it? the book says at 15K, and that's where i'm at after 8 months 
the paper gasket was in great shape. i'll give it another day or two before i get too excited. maybe it will stop on its own... |

I dont use the paper gasket I prefer OE gray you just put it on and put the 2 pcs. togeather wait about 5 mins and fill I used it on my front and rears on the TJ the rear is real wet at the bottom but it tends to bang on every thing si the cover is probably bent |

My Jeep dealer advised against it and said to use the genuine Mopar black goo. I couldnt care less as they re did it under warranty  even though I peeled it back sliding off the back of a rock !!
I guess thats what you get if you look after your dealer by buying the workshop a cold carton of beer ......... you'll find they'll bend over backwards for you

here in the US most dealers use the gray stuff at least the one we use does Same junk different color and will work on any thing even a busted fuel tank |

I would not get very agressive with the wrench trying to stop this leak. Usually, overtightening a cut gasket under a sheetmetal cover on a machined surface does little more than distort the cover (or stretch the bolts) causing it to leak more. Re-doing the job with RTV is your best bet if the leak continues. |

Have you guys seen or tried this. 
It's a gasket made by Lube-Locker. I used one of these last time I changed my rear with out any problems. It only needs hand tighten. With any diff cover, you will want to evenly tighten the bolts at the same time. Like changing a tire. Or you can pinch or distort the gasket. The other cool thing is unlike RTV. There is no setup time. As soon as the cover is back on fill with oil and drive away. Note the photo is for a Dana 44. The 8.25 looks the same. I just went the RTV route. No problems. I hate scraping the old RTV, but you have to do that either way. |
