Has anyone tried out the True Flow air filter system? I just got the e-mail flyer from Rusty's, and I saw it listed there.

I know I'm gonna get flamed but that is OK.

Any air intake system that claims to increase horsepower can only operate on one principle: Bigger holes in the air filter. And bigger holes allow larger dust particles into the engine than smaller holes would. That is a simple law of physics and you cannot change the laws of physics.

Since I am interested in the longevity of the engine versus a maybe 1% or 2% increase in HP I stick with the stock filters.

Some of these "bolt on" performance parts companies claim HP increases of "up to 20%" or something like that. That means they managed to find one vehicle somewhere that SEEMED to gain 20% with their product. You can be that "up to" is the key phrase. When you don't get that increase they tell you that they did not guarantee 20%, they just said it "might" get to 20%.

If there was a way to increase HP 5% and fuel mileage 5% for less than $200 I am sure DC would already have it. The manufacturers are all straining to meet the federal CAFE standards so a 5% increase in fuel mileage would be a big deal for them.

If a small gain in performance (mostly in your head) is worth it then go for it. Obviously it is worth it to a lot of people because these products continue to sell.

Bigger holes are not the only way to improve airflow. There is a lot of research that goes into these kind of things. Think about heads on an engine- why do people pollish them? Because it improves the airflow. Air flows differently accross different material. Different materiels pick up debris from the air more efficiently.

I don't trust stock/OEM junk, and replace every filter I get. Most companies skimp on small things to turn a proffit.

As far as all the claims... that is just advertising bs. Do you trust the TAG commercials or the Axe body spray commercials? I think most of them are over the top, but that doesn't negate the fact that there is a lot you can do to engines to improve their performance.
