I'm sure a lot of you know about the "Ratcheting sound" that occurs somewhere in the back when you are REALLY flexed out. Does anyone know what that is?

After the last wheeling trip, I started getting it when a lot less flexed than before. I'm not sure if I sohuld be worried or not.

Is it possible that I stripped the drive shaft a bit where it meets the diff? Anyone know what I'm talking about?

The only thing that I hear ratcheting is my Powertrax locker, and I do not believe you have one of those.

Kinda un-likely that the driveshaft splines were coming out of the tcase. The slip yoke is on the tcase, not the diff.

Not to sure what it could of been.

I would say limited slip.. or tire tread "ratcheting" on the plastic fenders at max flex

negative to both :(

I don't have limited slip and the flex isn't anywhere near stuffing a tire.

Gris it's your driveshaft hitting against your muffler. It's a really loud clattering. If that's what it is you should see a flat spot in the rim of the muffler closest to the rear diff ujoint. It is a very unnerving noise. I intantly killed the jeep slammed in park and jumped out to look. It only happens under extreme flex. I only heard it once when I was wheeling but I did switch to a flowmaster which is shorter than the stocker.

I'll check that out Parakeet. I should see some signs on the miffler, right?

Yea I didn't think to take pics when it happened but it you look at the rear driverside corner of the muffler you should see a flat spot in the rolled edge. That's where I was hitting. It's not the driveshaft that is hitting it IIRC it's the u-joint so maybe look for signs there too. Like I said I was majorly flexed out and don't think I've had it that flexed out since.

nope, not loud. not alarmingly loud anyways. It's not the kind of sound were I stopped and said "oh crap"

The muffler is clear btw. only damage is on the bottom where I've pounded it off rocks.

I would recommend getting it flexed out and having someone watch and listen for the noise. Or have them flex it out and you watch and listen. Keep us posted on what it was I would like to hear what it was.
