Depends. What is most important to you in a locker? Traditionally, most would say that a selectable locker (such as ARB) is "best." That way you're running an open diff under normal driving conditions and only locked when you need it. However, if that isn't a concern then you could do a "lunchbox" type locker. Powertrax would probably be best in that respect...operates somewhat like a limited slip diff, but fully locks up. Do you want to put something in both ends? BTW, 4.10 gearing is the best you can do right now. The D30a (front diff) really limits us in that respect. |

This page has a basic overview of the different Liberty locker options: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Jeep_Liberty/Lockers Installation is also a large determining factor in which locker you choose. The ARBs require the entire carrier to be removed and in some cases the pinion as well. Whereas, a "lunchbox" locker can be installed into the exisiting carrier. Whenever the carrier is removed, the ring gear backlash will need to be reset. Whenever the pinion is removed, a new crush sleeve is needed and the pinion depth and rotating torque will need to be reset. ARBs are really nice because they're selectable, but the intensive installation and air compressor will add a few hundred dollars to the already pricey locker. If you choose the ARB, I'd definitely regear your differentials at the same time to get the most bang for your installation buck. If you do regear, talk to Gris about where to find the cheaper Dana ring and pinion for the front differential. |

A lot of people have argued a locker up front is not a good idea. Thinking it leads to over stress on the aluminum housing and will grenade the differential. Most of the people who have blown there diff's did so from allowing the tires to spin. When the loose tire makes contact to the ground, the sudden stop is when the casing splits open. In theory the use of a locker will keep the tires from spinning out of control. Keeping this scenario from happing. To my knowledge this has not been proven. But it makes perfectly logical since to me. I just had an ARB installed in the rear last week. If you use your Jeep on road a lot the selectable types are a better decision. Much more expensive to buy and install but well worth it for the around town drivability. Maybe someone with a non-selectable locker will chime in and tell you there experiences. Performance off road if used right will yield the same response with either type. On-road you will feel a negative difference in the handling with a non-selectable. |
