okay so..i was driving home tonight from a friends house, going about 60mph in 6th gear, when the CEL (amber engine light) started flashing, i didnt notice at first but after a few flashes it clicked in my head what was going on...i didnt see , hear , or feel anything awkward

i downshifted to 5th and it went away.....so i was cruising again on another long strip in 6th, but this time around 45, and it started again...i downshifted but it stayed flashing

both times i was in low 6th gear around 1500-1800 rpms

wtf? anyone have any clue what this is about?

I was told by the dealer, that if it is flashing to stop driving it. If it is solid it is still okay to drive.

I have heard the same...flashing is bad, solid is not good but is supposed to be okay to drive in. Its strange that it goes off completely once it stops flashing though.

I believe flashing means that harm to the catalytic converter could occur. May also mean other things though. :?

Yes have your cat. conv. checked out...mine just let out its demons friday night...dealer doesn't know when i'll get my jeep back as they don't have any catalytic convertors in stock and only one in the regilonal warehouse...which God knows where that is...but they said could be 3 weeks possibly...but we'll see what happens....sorry for the rant,

get it checked out ASAP...don't want to get stranded anywhere...

is it just me or do you find that @$#% up , that we both have 2006 models, and its breaking? i have 3600 miles on my jeep

how the hell is the cat dying

ill see if it does it again today....i mean it only flashed for close to 10 seconds each time

When the cat dies, does it directly affect the drivability of the vehicle??? I guess what i'm saying is, since the dealer didn't have the cat. in stock, are you still driving your Kj or are you letting it sit???

it cant just BREAK....plus if it is "broken" , the CAT wont cause damage.....i mean if its clogged, well it might cause a little back up in the exhaust system, and maybe into the engine, but i dont suspect anything of harm

and to be honest...i do not see how a cat. converter can just "stop working" ... its a pipe with asbestos in it.... so im calling the
bs flag or the "i dont really know what im talking about" from the jeep dealerships

with that said: the o2 sensor on the cat. may be damaged, and thus sending wrong information back to the ecu.....maybe its making it run too rich or too lean of a mixture because it is reading different or A/F numbers than it is supposed to......OR..its not damaged and for some reason you are sending the wrong numbers and it is adjusting to a level it shouldnt be at (error zone)

but i dont see why or how my 3600 mile jeep with a lift is bugging out like that....and i cant wait to bring it in and them tell me , oh its b/c of the lift :)

but i figure ill go have them check it real fast with a code puller

Cats used to be basically a ceramic insert with a very this platinum coating. They can plug up and virtually stop the engine. Had one do that in a 1980 Malibu. Would go till the backpressure would almost kill the engine.

My Jeep is undrivable...I could get to about 20mph after all hell broke loose with my check engine light flashing and even my ESP light flashing...i couldn't make it up a hill, everything was still on, electricals, motor, i would just hit the accelerator and no power would be delivered to the wheels, the engine would not even rev. thus b/c the catcan went it clogged my exhaust in such a manner that I believe the computer decided to shut fuel supply to the motor due to the back up of exhaust in the system. I had to have it towed to the dealer and it is just sitting there waiting for a cat con to come in so they can replace it....for the record my 06 has just under 11,000 miles. The bad part about it, that friday morning b4 it happened I had it at the dealership looking at my check engine light that was on for the catalytic convertor/O2 sensor issue. But they said they couldn't find anything wrong with those mechanical/electrical systems so they reflashed the computer and teh light went away...then that night all of this happened....

I had one plug up once and the car would run till it built up so much pressure the engine died and then started spinning backwards.

Well according to the dealer today that catcon got so hot it melted all the bolts that hold it in place and they are trying to figure out how to get it off without damaging anything else around it. I see them having to replace the exhaust system after this whole ordeal...hopefully not any more...but we'll see what tomorrow brings....

My light came on and stayed on until they reset it at the dealership. They had to order the cat since they did not expect many '06's to have a bad converter. I forgot about it until about 2 weeks later when the light came on again. Fixed now. I wonder if it was the BP gas.

I used to have a Cadillac that could not stand Amoco gas. Engine light would come on each time. Used 76 instead.
