OK so i'm new to the whole 4x4 thing so I have a stupid question.

When I shift to 4low (with the trany in neutral) at about 4mph I hear and feel a *thud* while it is engaging. I'm just asking because shifting from 2wd to 4hi makes no noise and is smooth. Also should I move the lever nice and easy or just pull it in?

BTW After playing around today I can understand why the transmission would get hot while in 4low and the transmission in drive. It falt like it was shifting shift alot while in drive.

If it's the thud i'm thinking about, it's normal. Not real loud like something just broke, but loud enough for you to notice right?

As for shifting, just pull it right in to 4low. IIRC, there is some sort of mechanism that sorta locks the t-case shifter in place once its in a range, helps to prevent you from accidentally knocking it out of whatever 4x4 mode youre in....can't remember where i read that though, i think the owners manual, i'll have to go hit that up later to make sure.

And just to clarify, the overheating of the tranny has been happening in 4HI, shifting into 4LOW reduces the ammount the tranny has to work. And if you think it's shifting funny in 4lo thats cause it is!....lol. All that torque you have on hand now being in low range makes the shifting funnier than your everyday 2wd driving. Just remember not to go above 25mph in LOW range.

Yeah it's not loud.

Thanks for the info. I can't wait to get lifted and hit some trails.

Your Jeep is plenty capable w/o a lift. You will probably be suprised at what you can do stock. It also helps to remove the rear sway bar, you dont need it. The lift will help a lot (i'm still saving for mine) but there is no reason why you cant get out there, within reason, of course.

yea, mine has done that too, it only does it when i first go in though, not while im out driving around.

When in 4low, its best to move the gear selector into 1st gear so the tranny isnt shifting so much. It also holds u back on hills so ur not using the brakes so much.

Are your wheels straight when you do this? You need to go straight ahead 2-3 mph toss it into neutral and then pull up to 4Lo quickly, not slowly or with pause, but not brutally either.

Lots of things are happening on your KJ when you put it in 4 Lo. Did you know that your engine's computer also made some changes to your fuel delivery and engine timing, all automatically?

yeah mine does that too occaisioanlly but what i think it is is me not pulling it up all the way to engage it....so if it keeps popping out make sure you pull up firmly and feel it lock into the right location
